I know her feet need to touch the earth maybe once its airborn she'll lose track of it. Make sense If your radar sense is transmitted through dirt.
IIRC, she can "see" through her earth-bender power, it's why she doesn't act blind, so it doesn't matter if it's touching the ground or not, if it's made of earth, rock and later on metal, she can "see" it.
On an aesthetic note, Toph's face was always partially obscured by her hair, as she didn't need her eyes. And when depicting earth bending I would put in particles, dust and falling/floating debris.
