@inversekinematics "DAZ can keep their mess, I won't switch over G8 after testing G9 over and over in a bid to try and like it. I could knock up some drain pipes in Blender & form them into some kind of human that would work better than G9. But again that's just my opinion."
This 👆
If it weren't for the horrible joints (I'm presuming it's a JCM problem, I don't know that much about the geometry and rigging at that level), G9 might be a bit closer to usable. But it's just such a step backwards.
And, for the record, that's not just subjective reality, that's everyone's objective reality. If you've noticed it (in every moderately posed G9 render you've seen without postwork), you're not seeing things and you're not crazy (well, maybe), it's bad.
@itsmenotyou "we need a character converter from G9 to G8 , I'd be happy then. 🙂"A running consensus:

I dunno... To me, Daz seemed to put too much effort in the Men and Women are the same, so lets build a woke model that can be used for both to show how woke we are.
The G9 Males are.... I dunno. Too... something. IF you want an action hero with man-boobs, then use a G9.
It should have just been marketed as Daz' Transgender subset. Make a dude, Make a chick... all with one click!
I am disappointed... and sadly, it will probably be a long time til Gen10, and there is no guarantee that that model will be designed to be the best human figure.... and not have an overriding political agenda that corrupts the product.

January 29, 2024 at 8:37 AM #2055943Actually...
It's no problem to make a "proper" male and female from the same mesh.
Look at the original The Freak and Aiko 3.You can't accuse The Freak of not being "manly" enough or Aiko 3 of not being enough "feminine".
So, if the mesh geometry is designed properly, it literally can be "Anything".
*
The problen with G9 is that "it" is designed to be PA-Friendly first and foremost. It is a complete blank canvas to be modified in ZBrush by people who own the DAZ HD-Morph plugin. While HD-Morphs CAN be great, they are not a one-stop solution. If a figure lacks the proper foundation, it'll show even under a HD-Morph
This type of "blank canvas" mesh design also locks out all artists who don't have access to those "secret" HD-morphing plug ins. Probably intentionally.*
DAZ PA's prefer G9, because it allows them to churn out new content with the least effort.
THis is nothing new, btw.V4 was already more "PA-friendly" than V3, Genesis more than V4. Granted, G2 was a small step back toward "User-friendlyness", but afterwards it was back heading to where we are now.
*
Sadly, nothing really matters anymore, anyway.
AI is upon us, and it'll make any kind of "manual" CGI quite obsolete.
(It's already possible to animate still pictures directly or extract 3D models from a single photograph.)Personally, I use every mesh from Posette to G3 --- in Poser(!)
But it's just for fun. No great ambitions anymore.G8 is too complicated to set up, and I already have so much stuff for all my other figures, I don't see the point.
But that's just me. 😉
January 29, 2024 at 9:46 AM #2055955The first Genesis didn't work very well & neither does G9.
The issue is the androgeny.
The mesh densities in distinct important areas is the problem.
Whilst it is possible to get convincing distinctly male & female characters from it, it is not easy & many vendors don't try hard enough.
Bring on G10F & G10M, please.

January 29, 2024 at 11:49 AM #2055967@stahlratte, Thanks for the insightful comment, I'd never thought of it that way. I get the impression from Daz that they have no real programming talent anymore, having dumped them when they figured that they where going to make a billion from NFTs. G9 was part of that plan, hence the locked in HD morphs. That's something that needs to be hacked.
January 29, 2024 at 12:30 PM #2055971Why should folk waste their time with fixing G9?
You are never going to get a quality optimised product.
Much better to pull the plug & move on. :0/
In the mean time I am quite happy with G8 these days.
🙂
January 29, 2024 at 1:04 PM #2055973@eelgoo, I wasn't thinking about G9. I was suggesting that the super secret HD morph capability needs to be hacked so that EVERYBODY can make HD morphs, not just their stable of content creators.
January 29, 2024 at 1:16 PM #2055975Right, I take your point.
🙂
January 30, 2024 at 2:44 AM #2056073G9 is basically a dud all around. It changed too much, too hard after too long a time on one model.
Genesis 3 is clothing and hair compatible with Genesis 8 and was released 9 years ago. Genesis 8 was released in 2017 with partial compatibility with 3, the poses only needed some bone adjustment, it takes 30 seconds to port clothes and hair over, the textures are identical.
Genesis 8.1 was released in 2021 and had almost full compatibility with G8 with the only off bit being the expressions and even those can mostly be fixed with a minor hack.G9 was released less than a year after G8.1 and breaks everything.
This was a break of content larger than even going from Gen4 to Genesis (at least Genesis could use previous generations textures) with just as long if not longer an amount of time to build up and generate content. People don't want to start over and some of us couldn't. I do toon characters. Genesis 9 is still generally useless to me.
Honestly, to me, Genesis 9 looks like a desperation move after their idiotic NTF bullshit failed to make back and they needed to try and drum up income by forcing everyone to start over.
IMHO a proper G9 would have been based on a modified Genesis 8 mesh with the same skeleton and base morphs. Have it be a neuter figure that can switch between Male and Female with the same UVs. A break similar to G3 to g8 that would allow people who are sticking with Genesis 8 for a while to use G9 clothes with some work, while people using G9 could still make use of their G8 clothing and hair and skins.
G9 is just a bad figure IMHO that depends way too highly on HD morphs.

January 30, 2024 at 11:29 AM #2056103February 10, 2024 at 4:43 PM #2057975Use Richard's G9 - G8 Clothing clone.
It works pretty good for hair too. 😉
🙂
February 10, 2024 at 5:24 PM #2057979I would really like to see a hair converter too, for G8x.
February 12, 2024 at 9:13 PM #2058250I can relate to that.
That said it would be nice to cream off the least worst G9 items for use on G8.
@Windreaver0118 Thanks to Richard we can do that for clothing & hair.We just need to be able to conveniently port over the better G9 character morphs.
🙂
February 13, 2024 at 1:30 AM #2058286Well, I'm a Poser user, so I'm not up to speed with Studio's latest abilitys, but...
...wouldn't it be possible to either:
1. Make a head morph that looks like G9 for the G8 mesh? I know there are morphs for Genesis and G2 around that make them even look like V4, M4, even V3 and M3.
Maybe even make a geoshell so you can use G9 textures on G8?
OR
2. Literally stitch G9's head mesh onto G8's body? Maybe again with a geoshell neck to blend the different UV mapping between G9 and G8?
This was once common practice in Poser and worked remarkably well.***********************************************************
But as I said, it's a long time since I had installed Studio on my machine, (I think it was that dreaded pay-for PRO version), so I don't know what it is currently capeable of.
But from what I gather, many people like G9's face, but prefer the G8 body.
