I was reading a comic book written by Garth Ennis who is one of the best and funniest writers in the biz. He did a multi year run writing The Punisher and basically re-invented the character from a douche in a tight costume spouting cheesy lines to a deep, dark and twisted character with the kind of narrative that Hollywood strives for but always gets wrong. Anyway I was inspired enough to load the basic Gen8 Male and manipulate it into something resembling Garth's Frank Castle character. I think the outcome is passable but still too cheesy, looking more like a game character. I did learn a few things along the way and I plan to re-visit The Punisher when I have a better grip on 3D. Till then, here's Frank Castle: The Punisher.

June 10, 2018 at 3:23 PM #636142I think your model, pose and environment look good and I actually like the lighting effect you've got going on. But if you were a fan of Ennis's Punisher then you were probably a fan of Tim Bradstreet's cover art as well. If you look at Bradstreet's covers you'll see he almost always put Castle in strong shadow and usually lit from above. It gives a broody and almost ghostly look to the character and I'd even go as far as to say that lighting the top ridge features of Frank Castles face mimics his signature Punisher skull logo. The stark shadowing followed into the interior pages to get that "gritty" effect to the character and I think that's what you're trying to achieve, so try it with more shadowing if you want the grittier look.

Only thing "to me" that I "might" change are the buildings and lighting.
There just appears to be to much lighting on him during an overcast night and it has no blueish tint. Deer in headlights look.
Second the backround may be 3d but to me it just looks flat. To much blur blends the buildings into one glob with windows. I wouldnt Take a photo of this guy using a 1.2 aperture. Bokeh seems wrong for a hard core vigilante
June 11, 2018 at 2:19 AM #636718@EvilMonkey, I dig what you're saying and while I love the Tim Bradstreet covers I really wasn't going for that look, which is easily achieved in Photoshop, thanks for the advice though. 🙂
@Adam, Photographically speaking the scene is correct. You wouldn't shoot the Punisher with a 50mm lens so to keep a relatively safe distance you would use a 400mm lens at the very least and thus the DOF. Also, since the Punisher is the focus, anything else is a distraction. In fact, initially I had lightning in the background which I removed because it was too distracting. As for the lighting, I find it is easy to fall into the trap of shadowy mystery the result being the image is too dark and the effect is lost. Years of experience has taught me that so I make sure there is plenty of light on my subjects. In a studio I have hands on control on my lights but in 3D the controls are spread out in between the render settings and the lights themselves but I'm getting the hang of it now. Anyway, thanks for your thoughts, I do appreciate all intelligent discourse and insight. 🙂June 15, 2018 at 7:41 PM #642178i think that looks amazing
June 15, 2018 at 8:09 PM #642202I wouldnt attempt to photograph the Punisher with a 600mm lens and a x2 coupler.
A 400mm 2.8 will probably cost around 12k. Pretty hefty budget.
June 16, 2018 at 2:41 AM #642544@Adam, since we're waxing the philosophical... How much is your life worth 😉
June 16, 2018 at 3:36 AM #642584It would depend on who you ask. My "at" name is D0GG0D btw.
