I remember the days of Posette and Dork. I also know that there is (was?) a movement afoot to keep Posette and its stuff alive forever: https://www.posetteforever.com/
But, a problem. It isn't that Posette is dumb or useless, it's that it's buried in the mists of time. I have a runtime directory packed full of ancient-but-never-used figures: Alexa, LaRoo, Wapi Doll, Terai Yuki, LaLaLa, Eroko, Yuka, Sara, Anime Doll, Neftoon Gal, An An, Koshini, Dina, and too many others... and I'll probably never use them again.
Aside from some very niche figures (e.g. AA Foetus), I have no reason to use most of them. It's not that I simply discard for the same of the new , but that I shoot for the ultimate flexibility. G3, G8 (and to a growing extent G9) represent that flexibility.
I use a combo of CrossDresser and autofit to bring interesting clothing items from the past (and @stahlratte , I cannot more highly recommend CrossDresser and all the clothing plugins you can find - it will do you good for converting V4 to a wide variety of older figures.) Otherwise, I can shape to taste for the most part.
March 27, 2024 at 5:12 PM #2066672Of course you're right, Grouchy Old Fart.
Nothing's more efficient than using one well designed mesh for everything, as all the little "extras" that come along with the mesh are easily reuseable for every single character you create.
You create a certain expression you like, you can reuse it on all your characters.
You create a certain pose, the same. A certain shader, the same.
Not to mention autofit.
And especially when I see all those awesome G8 and G9 sculpts, I so wish I'd be 20 years younger again, and would just be starting with that crazy 3D thing that I'm so addicted to.
(While doing spring cleaning, I found the old Amazon order sheet about Poser 4 dating back to 2003. Oh my, how time flies)*
But I'm 59 now, and Poser and I have a 21yrs of history. And I met quite a few great people along this journey, some of them sadly have moved on or actually passed away.
And using my vintage meshes not only is a constant test for my abilities, it makes me remember those friendships and the exitement of discovering new things.Posette isn't actually my favorite mesh, (That would be V3 and her "family"), but whenever I use her, I remember people like XAA, who was so passionate about the "Rose" character he based on her:
https://poserdazfreebies.miraheze.org/wiki/User:Xaa
Then there was Arduino's WWG which created quite a stir. Or the NEAEna project.
People were so exited when DAZ introduced the original Vicky and Michael.
So much drama back then between the Vicky-Lovers and the Posette-Holdouts. Lol.I have to admit I don't see those meshes anymore as a "means to an end", but they've become more for me. Almost as works of arts all by themselves, with their own identity.
(Anybody remember Dr Geeps "NaySayGuy?"That's why I keep them around and try to improve them using modern shader and rigging tech.
*But, yes, again, if your main goal is to be productive and be efficient, G8 or G9 are the meshes to choose.
I also happily admit that I'm a bit weird in my ways and sometimes do things "Just for the heck of it". 🙂
Anyway, thanks for the links. I know Posetteforever, but haven't visited in over a decade, I think.
I built my own "cloth conversion pipeline", as I have many custom built characters, and even have PP-10 installed which can still run Wardrobe Wizzard, but will definitely look into CrossDresser.March 27, 2024 at 6:18 PM #2066685@stahlratte, Your post was quite nostalgic although I'm older than you by a decade. I like to tell younger folks that I installed an early version of Poser from a CD in the back of 'Boot' magazine and I still have a dead tree copy of B.L. Render's "Figure Creation with Poser 5". I'm mostly just playing dress-up with dolls and getting my girls into ridiculous situations along the lines of Perils of Pauline. I love the campy damsel's in distress genre (no hard core gore or BDSM creepy stuff here) and don't worry about amazing renders. A lot of the time, screenshots are good enough for me.
I'm just loading up Stable Diffusion and can't wait to see where that goes.
And ya...Dr Geep was great. I wonder if he's still around.March 27, 2024 at 6:20 PM #2066686*chuckle* He's still around, and reading the article reminded me that I'd bought one of his CD's.
https://www.posersoftware.com/article/447/poser-creator-series-understanding-poser-scale-with-dr-geepMarch 28, 2024 at 2:10 PM #2066885Rendatrocity faded off years ago, but much like the fictional creation of George Romero, the body hasn't quite realized it yet. A quick peek of the once mighty Poser Forum shows a ghost town... there's still a thread in there limping along from 10-15 years ago (about Aiko 3!?) The renders they show off in the galleries aren't much improved from 2004. I could find better images in the dusty archives of Digital Blasphemy (...is that still around? Holy crap, it is!)
The only thing worth visiting there is their Free Stuff section, where you find one Poser-specific item for every 20-30 DS-specific items (their store is a nightmare to navigate, so, I don't.) Not a good look if you own Poser, is it?
Mentioning the friends one made in this little realm really struck home with me; I still remember where I was when I found out that alt.binaries.poser patriarch Dr. Legume had died (his heart was in lousy shape anyway, but...) I'm not quite your age (very close, though) but I've been in and around since the late 1990s, getting serious around 2000 or so, so I do understand the nostalgia. For me though, I also understand fully how time and progress erases compatibility with data, so there are a handful of characters that I painstakingly migrate from mesh to mesh, in order to keep them from one day 'dying' just because Windows decides that it won't be compatible with the ancient copy of Poser (or someday, DS) I have. After all, DS will stop being maintained as well, and I have to account for that eventuality... as do we all.
