Hi all,
I made this account quite a bit ago but back then had AMD GPU so I put in on hold until I switched. I hope I don't come off as ignorant or dumb by asking this - please excuse any faux pas as it is not intended.
So, I read the FAQ here on the forum in regards to assets from a couple of sites where you have to adjust timestamps before posting and it seems not too complicated. That takes care of one side but on the other I wanted to ask about precautions that should be taken when using files from the links.
Is there any way Daz detects or checks the legitimacy of files, if they aren't attached to your account orders or if there is any "callback to the server" or some kind of identifier that exposes the files? Consequently, should a user maximize the safety by using VPN and/or sandboxing Daz when using it to block internet access? Is being logged into Daz3D with your account to use the store items which is obviously connected to your payment info something one should not do when using files from the links? It would probably be very easy to track that (at least I assume) so I just wanted to make sure what precautions need ot be taken.

Extremely unlikely to be any issue, but if you want another level of security, don't allow DS online access.
I never go online with mine.

Couple of things to be aware of here. I already mentioned it in a previous thread here, which I can't locate anymore owing to the goldfish memory retention capacity of the forum software (or mine, I can't honestly tell apart at this point).
1) DIM has the inherent ability to check for product updates for any and every product installed using it, every time the user logs in while it is set to online mode. This is a good thing for keeping your genuine stock up to date. But imagine DIM dialing home with product metadata and your user account data for products that do not exist in your account. I mean, the product metadata obviously contains the SKU Id and Daz already maintains the SKUs that are there in your account, so its anybody's guess how the Daz servers would handle requests that contains an SKU-user account combination that shouldn't exist.
2) DIM has the feature of sorting products by Order Date. No points for guessing the order dates for pirated DIM packages. The DIM installer package does not contain any order related metadata, so a pirated DIM package and an offline installed genuine DIM package would be identical in all (known) aspects. But as mentioned in (1) above, Daz maintains the SKU-user-account-order-data associations on their servers which cannot be manipulated by any known illegitimate methods. How DIM handles packages with missing order date associations is anybody's guess.
Working with DIM in offline mode is an option, but comes at the cost of missing product updates for genuinely acquired products, since there is no other alternative for receiving product update notifications (outside DIM) for DIM installed products.
That said, it is possible to intercept the SSL traffic of DIM to peek what information it is sending back to the servers, but as others mentioned, the need hasn't arise ... yet.
So take it for what it's worth.
Of course, it goes without saying, that the previous concerns applies only if you install pirated products using DIM, instead of unzipping them directly into your content library like any other zip files. But, installing with DIM gives you the ability to easily manage (uninstall, move) products across Content Sets, if you are using that Daz Studio feature, for all products it manages irrespective of their source.
