From the bits and pieces I've read and seen on YT, the problem seems to be with the thermal pads between the PCB and heatsink. They've either used low-quality pads that start to leak oils when hot, or the pads are too thin and don't provide enough contact between the board and heatsink. Replacing the pads seems to fix the issue but it's frankly disgusting that the board partners haven't fixed something that costs a few pennies to rectify.
I've pretty much decided at this point that I'll only buy a Founders Edition card, both because of the problems you've listed and because I refuse to pay 50-100% more than RRP. I'd rather wait another year than line the pockets of a company that has so little regard for QA and would rather make a short-term cash grab at the expense of their customers.
