Despite Natural Eyes 2 scleras that are just plain awful around the sides with the visible sclera more than 50% red with the eyes to the side it is still the best looking eye product I have seen.
Even Bluejuante's models suffer from bloodshot eyes. Why? oh why?
I'm no expert. In photoshop I have tried countless times to paint the Natural eyes 2 scleras better but end up with too solid or blotchy scleras. The iris also don't blend well with textures from other characters.
If you're going for realism what do you use? Raaya? Mousso? Something else?
September 3, 2022 at 6:39 AM #1862943This seems to be a bit of a trend with PAs and I can understand why it may be less than desirable for close-ups. However you shouldn't have any trouble copy and pasteing the texture/s from any other G8.1 model's eyes. On the other hand, pure white sclera's and snow white teeth look unnatural to me.
American v British TeethSeptember 3, 2022 at 7:05 AM #1862967I am a great fan of ultra-realism.
Reality is not perfect.
It really depends what kind of somewhat idealised realism you are after.
🙂
September 3, 2022 at 7:06 AM #1862968Thank you for the suggestion Frank21. Do you mean in Daz?
I could experiment with more combinations. The ones I tried didn't blend well. I've tried Natural eyes 2 with Bluejaunte's scleras using a copy paste because BJ's sclera has a nicer white that looks like it has a slight purple tint... even though the red on around the side.
Another one, it was with P3D I got the sclera showing through between the center iris and the litmus band.
My take on teeth 🙂 I like to sink the lower canines, and add a bit of irregularity like a slight gap between the 2 front teeth. The worst offender is the lower canines. Looks like orgs or ogres lol.
IRL it's best to ask the dentist to add some imperfection to dentures like a slight skewed overlap on the front teeth. On makeover shows I've seen very nice implants, da Vinci veneers.
September 3, 2022 at 7:14 AM #1862971That's my take too Eelgoo. In talking morphs the body shape and face shape deviates so far from the average population we might as well be looking at cartoon characters.
Recently I've looked at people's eyes irl and tv and I don't get why the red side sclera became a trend. My guess us it started with an attempt to add a bit of realism like mimicking red veins from a distance but it has gotten ridiculous.
September 3, 2022 at 10:49 AM #1863067I will try to do that. Thank you LivingPixels. Your example looks very near perfect. I would happily buy a set that looks like that. Which textures did you use as the starting point for the sclera and iris?
September 3, 2022 at 12:55 PM #1863107Now that is the kind of content that would really merit the 'custom' description & premium.
I think you would find such uploads popular, if you had a mind to do that.
🙂
September 3, 2022 at 1:16 PM #1863113@littlepleasures Thanks a lot for the tips! They do indeed make a lot of sense. 🙂
Although, I don't think that "overdoing it" is a Daz PA thing, it's more of a human thing, since I have heard someone else complain about that in Photoshop tutorials...so my guess it's also a "lack of experience" thing.
September 3, 2022 at 1:50 PM #1863131Thanks LivingPixels! That is next level. Really great.
September 3, 2022 at 11:46 PM #1863282In my own experience, I've found most eyes and eye "products" - regardless of type or hype - to be flat and cartoonish in actual application, no matter the effort and "trick" and "tool". The render engine plays a big role as well, and DAZ Iray is not the kindest or easiest, which just amplifies the frustration.
I've used a half a dozen eye "packages" with no major difference or improvement over stock model eye shaders/MATs, depending on the vendor.
The key, for me, has been depth, glossiness, and tone - as with most things leading to realism in rendering. And as well with most things DAZ, lots of tweaking is standard to arrive at something believable, and that's often going to come down to an individual scene setup.
Lighting is huge, but sclera color and shading is important, too. Too bright white is unnatural and cartoonish. And if left that way will throw any good render off and ruin the suspended disbelief. (Teeth are the same. SSS and high gloss are crucial to good smile and open-mouth renders. Put unnaturally white and bright in the mix and the illusion is over.)
I've gone back to using stock Victoria 8.1 eyes and G8.1 eye moisture on almost everything I do anymore. (Which both work fine on all G8 models as well, btw.)
When dialed correctly for brightness (again depends on scene/lighting) V8.1 eye shaders have really good realism (my personal underlying goal). I'm still not 100% satisfied with the Iris normals, but it's still a WIP.
In the latter two images, comparison between the darkened white dialed down off the stock sclera and the default V8.1 sclera base white unaltered. While seemingly minor, in both closeups and at distance the brightness has a definitive impact, especially when taking skin tone into consideration. If the contrast between sclera brightness and skin tone is too extreme, it leads to a cartoonish racoon effect, or "glowing eyes" (and, again, often flat). They don't "fit" together. Brain won't trust or believe it. Even on extremely pale skin tones, a too-white/bright and flat-toned eye will seem out of place and artificial. (Same for teeth, nails, and other.)Eyes are one thing among a short list that can make or break the illusion. Perhaps the greatest thing when wrong or off.
