If someone spends points to get an item from the blog, and it turns out to be a dead link, and the item gets reposted later -- does that person automatically get access to the new link? Or would they have to spend 50 points again to get the new link?

Dead posts are (or should be) marked as such and I wouldn't be wasting points on trying to DL them. With filled requests, you can contact the filler to see if they will let you send points to get it.
And no, you won't get new links to subsequent posts of the same item for free. In fact I'd say you wouldn't as there's no automated process to do that. Just DL the new one.

(to clarify, I meant dead posts that had not yet been marked as dead -- ones that I had the misfortune to discover were dead and had to report myself)

I've been caught a couple of times by that too. No you won't get your points back and make sure to flag the post as dead.

The problem with some of the links that are dead is that they never get refreshed and since there is no indication if it is refreshed, people would be a bit wary to try to download it again..

There are a few that I have marked as Dead and even sent PMs to the uploader.. no reply and not refreshed yet

it's hit or miss with asking OP to renew a link. If they are available, they give a new link to a mod and the post is fixed. If not, they go to Dead Posts for someone to re-up.

You don't automatically get any refund though. But if you ask nicely, sometimes it happens 🙂

Thanks so much Redflag, I appreciate it!
And I'll definitely be sure to report any bad links I come across.

If you get hit with a bad link, I believe you can ask a mod for a refund via PM

ONLY HUNTER CAN GIVE YOU BACK POINTS FROM THE TREASURY.

I, as a MODERATOR do not have access to reverse funding from the blog to users. I don't know if Monk or Eeelgoo have higher access than I do. You may wish to ask them.

    Just FYI

You’re missing the whole point (pun intended).. its, as @Frank21 pointed out.. there are a few drawbacks in the current system and we just have to live with them.. 🙂

I don't think I am missing the point so much... I just got to a place where 50, 500, or 5000 points doesn't mean much to me. I'll report a dead link, but I could care less about the points.

I have participated in MANY threads here about how various aspects of the "system" is broken. I've given my opinion, solutions, even volunteered to help fix it, and... crickets...
So, believe me, I get it. (or don't believe me... don't really care.)

The best thing, imho, is to get to that place where points don't matter, out of personal abundance. Just become active on the site. There are lots of ways to earn points from art contests to re-upping dead links.

I got my feet wet by looking for something that I wanted, that had a high bounty, and "gave back" to the community by buying it and posting.

Then scour the dead post link to see what you have that is "dead"... sometimes links go down after only a few days or hours... give the OP some time to re-up, but after about a week, post it yourself.

There are other places to get free assets, check those to see if they have anything dead/we don't have.

And soon enough, you won't be caring too much about points cause' you'll have so many.

Your mileage may vary, of course.

Very true.. I've been here for only around 4 months now.. and I am liking it here, especially with so many experts around..

yeah loosing some points for dead links is annoying but so what ... even if i remember times where i got points back for dead posts without even asking for it. sometimes i even spend points on dead flagged posts because i'm not reading properly ... 😄

What @Redflag said. If I lose 50 points on something, it's no big deal and flagging it is part of helping keep the community going.

    @AnjaBear
    - thank you for the correction! I really wasn't entirely sure
