Hi, I just wanted a Yugo car model that I could upload into Daz3d. Not to animated but just to use as a prop. Wanted a decent one not some low rez blocked shaped one. Saw this free one I liked here:
https://grabcad.com/library/yugo-5
Took the .stp file it was in and converted it to .obj and few other formats. The size balloons up to over 1 GB. It will load into Daz3d but no material files. Just the solid gray look. Is that the way a .stp file works?
Tried another free one here:
https://3dwarehouse.sketchup.com/model/u9f865e9d-7b20-4049-bd3b-14850015398f/yugo?hl=en&login=true
Much similar in size but couldn't get the sketchup files to converter at all and the .dae version will load in Daz3d but only bits and pieces of the car are visible. Tried to convert the .dae file into .obj with no luck.
I used a couple of the online converters:
https://products.aspose.app/3d/conversion/
https://anyconv.com/I've loaded many .obj files into Daz3d and know how to add the textures manually if necessary.
Hoping someone who is familiar with these conversions might be able to offer some advice. Thanks!
June 20, 2022 at 3:06 PM #1821823it shouldn't get so bloated after conversion, if you can upload the file somewhere, i'll have a look at it. i don't want register an account just for this ...
June 20, 2022 at 3:55 PM #1821833STP are usually created by CAD software such as AutoCAD, Solidworks. These programs use NURBS for modelling instead of Polygons. CAD is used for machine engineering, for instance where high precision is required. So, converting the file in OBJ or STL will always create a file with a huge file size. the exported file will not contain any texture mapping information. that must be done with a CGI software 3DS Max, Blender, Cinema4D, Maya.
Speaking from experience, it's not easy nor convenient to make STP files workable in CGI rendering software.June 20, 2022 at 4:08 PM #1821835There should be no problems with the Yugo from Sketchup tho. you just need to export it directly from the Sketchup program - no online converters, they suck
June 20, 2022 at 4:16 PM #1821838@ Stachelzelle Concerning the first one the file was over 100 MB so that exceeded the free online converters. Had to download and use FreeCad to convert it. Regardless as Hodor says if it doesn't come with texture maps I'm not interested. Maybe for a Rolls Royce but not a Yugo. 😁
In the second file I can see the texture maps. It's just when loaded into Daz3d the whole file looks foreign to me. Only bits and pieces appear in the view port and the scene tab has numerous groups and instances. Figuring out what texture goes where in the surface tab looks daunting.
Just get that feeling that this isn't the way it suppose to work.

June 20, 2022 at 4:24 PM #1821842Share and upload the file then. I will try to convert it for you 🙂

At the website they say it's available in the following formats:
Sketchup 2022 Model
Sketchup 2021 Model
Sketchup 2020 Model
Sketchup 2019 Model
Collada FileWhich one do you want to try? Here is the Collada File
June 20, 2022 at 5:47 PM #1821854there we go ... made you a duf and a fbx.

June 20, 2022 at 6:49 PM #1821870I was able to open the collada file in Blender but it's corrupted somehow. It has tons of overlapping faces and vertices. There are no proper UV's either - meaning it can't be textured as it is now, only single color car paint perhaps will work.
The double faces (!) will cause shading issues with DAZ Iray renderer. and probably lag too.
I may have time to clean it up over the next day, or may not 😛 I'll share it if i do.Meanwhile try stachelzelle's conversion, perhaps it works good enough for you.
June 20, 2022 at 8:11 PM #1821891in my file the mapping is still intact 😏 so you just need to put some effort in better material settings, you know, specular color, reflection, adjust smoothing ... the usual stuff for this kind of low poly model 🙏
June 20, 2022 at 11:19 PM #1821928Thank you both for the time and effort. Stachelzelle's conversion looks good. Much appreciated.
