I should add, DS is more powerful than most of the users know

Agreed. For example, meshgrabber is really just a user-friendly front end for the d-form tools in Studio. If users have the time and patience, taking a couple of weeks to learn Studio by watching youtube will get folks a long way into making Studio more productive. Learn L.I.E. overlays, geoshells, d-form, geometry tools, rigging tools, transforming tools, puppeteering, lighting techniques, posing techniques, controlling the environment in render settings, etc. If you have a working knowledge of these things, Studio becomes much more useful. It will never be zbrush or 3ds max, but then again, those won't be Studio either.

Also, learn gimp or, if you have the $$$ photoshop. This will allow you to manipulate your renders to the next level and create new materials, L.I.E.s, and textures for your Daz library.

I also agree that blender is the best option out there right now. It is a modeling app, an animation app, a rigging app, a UV/surface painting app and a drawing app. It doesn't do any of these as well as the $1000++ apps like the Adobe, Maxon and Autodesk suites do, but it does all of them very well and none of the other apps do everything blender does. Plus it's free and you only have to learn one app. Bonus is, once you can do things in blender, it makes it vastly easier to learn the specialized apps like zbrush and Maya.

I just downloaded Blender and will start giving it a spin. I also don't have Photoshop. but I use the heck out of GIMP. I've been watching some Photoshop tutorials and may take the plunge on that. The bridge from Daz to Photoshop appears to be one of the few that work pretty decently.
