Has anyone been playing with this thing? Their Discord server and RH's forum are pretty quiet. It's had a couple of updates so far.

I get the impression that RH is trying to take over from Daz. PoseStudio will be free and open source and will use scripts and extensions that others make. I made comments in their Discord to NOT make the mistakes that Daz has made over the years by locking in various features to some proprietary service like Iray. It needs a real draping engine that works as well as the one in Marvelous Designer and don't keep features from users, like Daz does with HD morphs. They also can't require any sort of online connection. People won't stand for it anymore.
I have all kinds of enthusiasm for this project but am not expecting it to succeed.

What's the purpose of this? From what I can determine, this appears to be a posing app for DAZ figures in the obj format. DS does a decent job with that already. If there are plans to expand this to things other than figures (e.g. clothing) and to add dynamic "posing" like MD does (i.e. draping), that could be a game changer. dForce was sold as DAZ's solution to MD's draping engine, but the lack of any control or an interactive workflow makes it really hit or miss and it's way too resource intensive (it is a DAZ product after all). I don't really do discord but if their discord server has more information on this product (their RH page and github don't, at least that I could find), I'd be willing to take a look.

The irony is kind of hilarious, truth be told.

Gather 'round the campfire children, grab a s'more, and I'll explain:

DAZ Studio was started by DAZ in response to licensing fee demands from Curious Labs (Poser's owner in 2002-2003) so that the Vicky (and Michael) 2 and 3 figures could use the Hair and Face Rooms in the upcoming Poser 5. DAZ instead went out and built their own Poser, just this time with blackjack and hookers, releasing it in 2005. Yes, it took that many years - they built it first as a what-if as negotiations swung back and forth, then they went full guns after Poser 5 failed as a release, Curious Labs collapsed, and Poser got sold to some outfit called EGISys as its future became uncertain. By the time Studio did come out, Poser was on its 2nd-3rd owner, and DAZ Studio went from being the anti-Poser, to being a lifeboat for DAZ' business model.

We all know what happened from there. Vicky 4 came out in 2005, but it was the last DAZ model Poser could fully use (and is still the most-used model in Poser today... among the few who still use it these days.)

As for Pose Studio? alea iacta est - let's see what it can do. I think Renderhub adopted it because it knows DAZ owns DAZ Studio, Renderosity owns Poser (for what that's worth), and Renderhub wants to be one of the big boys. This strategy also (partly) explains why they purged vendors and content so hard a few months ago - can't market an ecosystem if the customers think you're out there permitting DMCA violations and home-grown CSAM.

Unless they have a lot of resources of time, money, & personnel with relevant skill sets, they are going to struggle to make a mark with it.
Daz struggled with DS for years & I think they have much more in the way of resources than 'Hub do.
Also they will need an angle with its functionality to make folk move away from DS, which in its recent iterations despite lots of shortcomings is a pretty slick, robust program in what it does well. Especially at it's price point. 😉

This is precisely what killed Poser.

Killing DS will be harder to do at that price point as well - and if you're going to shoot the king, you'd best not miss.

The software that offers a modern rendering engine capable of photorealism will win.
Iray is totally outdated. waiting more than 1 hour to render a picture in the age of AI is non-sense.
we need an instant-render like a printscreen in a video-game to not be killed by AI.
and with the lack of inovation in dazstudio compagny i think they can be fucked if one of the challenger suddenly come with a photorealist engin.

    (Laughs in toon)

Sure, photorealistic output is fine and all (and the toughest to achieve), but AI is going to own that space soon enough - best DAZ (or anyone) can do is to latch onto Comfy Desktop or similar as a plugin render engine. But, my point is to keep in mind it's also the artistic styles (toon, stylized, comic, anime/manga, etc) that a very substantial userbase works and plays in.

I do agree that Iray has about had its run, but I gotta tell you - if it's taking you an hour to render a scene, you might want to fix your settings, get a newer (compatible/RTX!) card, or stop rendering 40 G9's in a scene! Most likely though, it sounds like you're using fallback CPU rendering, so either get a recent nVidia GPU or get your settings working.

I just checked the prices of a new 4090 as I was thinking of upgrading my second PC (current 4070). $4000!!! Insane. And a 5090 is closing in on $7000. That is even more insane. My workhorse PC has a 4090 and it renders just about everything I've thrown at it in a few minutes (at 3 quality and 99% convergence) but my 4070 can do them in about 4x the render time, so I'm sticking with that until things stop being insane. Unfortunately, upgrading GPUs right now is not an option for most folks.

    When NFT's collapsed I got a 12Gb 3060 card for a measly 600 smackers. It replaced an ancient 2Gb ten-something card.
