I want to thank whoever posted the copy of Poser, and I intend to play with the thing, but I am curious...
Does anyone even use it anymore? I used Poser years ago (started right as Poser 4 came out), but when DS and 3Delight came out, I jumped and never looked back.
I sniffed around, and Poser pretty much stopped taking DAZ figures at V4/M4. A few Renderosity threads say that you can import the Genesis series figures after some convoluted process that looks quite nasty, but...
So, who still uses Poser? Do you like using it (not in comparison to anything else, but in general)? If so, why?
October 4, 2023 at 1:13 PM #2033294I haven't used it since I played around with the previous release. There's really no point as, IMO, Daz is so much better now. I remember back in the day when you could either get the free standard edition of Daz or pay for the pro version; Poser was definitely superior. The majority of artists worked with Poser as opposed to Daz. However, Daz has actually improved over the years whereas Poser has kind of stagnated.
October 4, 2023 at 4:06 PM #2033317Agreed.
I don't really see why Poser is still around TBH. 🙁
October 4, 2023 at 4:26 PM #2033319@eelgoo I mean; are the majority of 3D hobbyists - or pro's for that matter - going to shell out $250 on Poser when Daz is free..
October 4, 2023 at 6:32 PM #2033349I started with Poser at the first release when it came on a CD (remember those?) in the back of a gamer magazine (remember those too?).
It's biggest problems where the Kai's Power Goo interface (which never changed) and it's legendary instability. It crashed all t-h-e time, everytime, constantly and continually for a wide variety of reasons, and no reason at all. Sometimes it crashed before it had even finished opening up. I play with every new version that comes out and it's still crash-tastic.
Unfortunately it's not software to the Poser faithful, it's a religion.October 4, 2023 at 11:05 PM #2033427Heh, I guess I'm one of those 'religious' 😛
I started with Studio back in the day of V3, but after trying Poser, I never looked back. A lot of people hate the Kai Cruze interface, but I prefer it. I hate Studios interface. But mostly, I don't have a compatible nvidia card, and lets face it, if you don't you can forget about Iray. I don't care about photorealism anyway, so why bother? Poser does what I need, and that's good enough for me. Yea I paid for it, but my current version was less than 50 dollars (special offer on P11).
You are right that the figures are starting to become a bother, but weightmapped V4/Sasha is still good enough for my needs. I personally find the latest genesis models to be rahter freaky, and unless you only do close-ups, there is no real benefit anyway. Not to mention that from what I have read in forums, everything around genesis and all the content made today has become so resource-heavy that you need a really beefy rig to handle it. I don't, so I stick with what works for me.
True, some versions of Poser has been really crash-tastic, but by golly, so has Studio, at least when I have tried it now and again over the years. My current version is actually pretty stable, and I often leave it open for days while working on things.
Yea, Poser isn't everyone's cup of tea, but neither is Studio, and I actually think that it's great that there are options! That is, I'm not too optimistic about the future, I dislike Bondware as a company, and in my eyes they have made many really stupid desicions since they took over. I don't think there are that many people still using it left, and how much longer it will survive. But with todays changes in technology and introduction of AI, who knows what will happen? And with changes in economy and both Daz and Bondware being reliant on income from content, there's a fair chance both Poser and Studio will disappear before long.
October 4, 2023 at 11:27 PM #2033432Never really used it ... as I'm rather new to the 3d art environment. Even thou I got a copy of the latest version - never really bother to install it. Quite happy with daz3d.
October 5, 2023 at 12:08 PM #2033578I agree with several of your points @moffet. I too, still mostly use Vicky Fourpointtwoplusplus (the Sasha version doesn't work in Studio). I'm not interested in extreme realism and she loads instantly, unlike the Genesis bimbos. The biggest draw for me is her extensive, massive, gargantuan wardrobe. All the Genesis broads together can't match Vicky's wide variety of clothes, shoes, lingerie and jewelry. she also has a much wider variety of clothes than new figures. Back in her heyday there where numerous independent creators that weren't locked into an endless stream of Sc-Fi and fantasy weirdness.
I found Studio to be rock solid and had it run continually for days without problems. More recent versions aren't so good.
As a professional graphic artist for many decades I liked that Studio mostly followed Adobes pallet system.
My only suggestion for Rendo is to make Poser fully compatible with Genesis figures and dump their LaFemme figures. From what I've read on their forums and the prolific usenet Poser group, many more folks use V4 than La Femme. Hanging desperately onto La Femme is wasting their resources.October 5, 2023 at 4:19 PM #2033637Totally agree on La Femme - I tried it when it was first released (I always try new figures), but one look at her hands alone made me scream and run away. LF2 seems to be a little improved, but the hands are still the same monstrosity. What is it about hands? Is it really that hard to make them properly? Project Evolution has beautiful hands - shame the rest is too complicated to get any vendor support
October 5, 2023 at 4:30 PM #2033641*chuckle*, I've followed Ero since he first started and am impressed with his work.
