Does anybody know of a large old western ranch house please? This seems to be about the only I can find but this is exactly the sort I'm after.
Ranch House
Thanks!August 28, 2022 at 7:30 PM #1861300That's the McFarlane Ranch, isn't it?
August 28, 2022 at 7:50 PM #1861303Erm... I honestly don't know and the text doesn't state. Is that in Yellowstone??
August 28, 2022 at 7:53 PM #1861304Hahaha just discovered what the McFarlane ranch is from! Sorry I'm not a gamer these days 🤭

Look around, any one of these should easily be able to be ripped from the viewer. 🙂
https://sketchfab.com/search?q=ranch+house&type=modelsHere's the ranch you showed:
ranch-house [HowardCoates].rarWith a little touch up in Blender (or whatever), maybe some better textures, this could be a decent Daz support asset.
August 29, 2022 at 8:17 AM #1861421Amber you're a star. I've tried capturing via software but never been successful. For instance, I tried to grab one model and it came out in separate pieces that were almost impossible to reassemble so your help here is huggable!!!
I can retexture etc so this is brilliant. Thanks again!
August 30, 2022 at 5:19 AM #1861597I just picked this up, out of pure curiosity. How can I import such a file into DAZ? I tried the "Import" dialogue to load the obj, but while the Ranch appeared in the scene library it wasn't visible.
August 30, 2022 at 7:57 AM #1861633@ColdBeer31 If its like other objects I've used before, then you need to go into the materials pane. Once in there, go to each material and check the Geometry section. It will probably be set at 0 so just use the slider to pump it up to 100% and there it should be!!
Hope this works 😉
August 30, 2022 at 12:06 PM #1861757Errrmmm ... "Materials Pane"? Sure? Neither have I ever seen it in DAZ nor would I know where to find it. Sorry for probably being very dumb.
August 30, 2022 at 3:41 PM #1861807OK I'm away from the laptop at the moment so I'm working from memory so...
On the right hand side of the screen in daz, bottom right hand corner, is a pane with about 4 or 5 tabs? One of those says MATERIALS. Click on that tab then make sure you have the ranch selected.
There should be a list of all the materials used in the ranch obj. Click on each one in turn, and there will be a folder saying geometry. Click on that and there will be an entry that says cutout something (can't remember what but it starts with cutout) This is probably set to 0% so move the slider across to 100% and the ranch will start to appear.
You have to do this on all the materials slots.
That SHOULD sort it 🙃🙂
August 30, 2022 at 3:58 PM #1861812OK time to correct myself...
The pane in the bottom right hand corner of the DAZ screen has 3 tabs along the top of it. Select EDITOR
Then the tabs appear down the left hand side, PARAMETERS is the first so move down and you'll see SURFACES. Click on this.
When you select the OBJ in the SCENE panel in the top right corner of the screen, the SURFACES window fills with the names of the materials used. From here on refer to my last rubbish instructions 🙂
August 30, 2022 at 4:15 PM #1861823🙂 Should have thought of it myself, thanks a lot.
However: No surfaces to find. Nothing. Nada. Zilch.
I am pretty sure that the "Import" dialogue isn't the right way to import these models. I would give up on this, if I weren't interested to get a completely dirfferent model from Sketchfab once I found out how to work with them.August 30, 2022 at 5:01 PM #1861843@ColdBeer31 Just got back to the laptop and I'm having the same issue. Content says it's there but it obviously isn't???
@amberkat Any help here? I'm probably missing something obvious but I don't know what. I've tried drag n drop, and import both with the same result. Doh!September 1, 2022 at 12:17 AM #1862205@unusualsuspex
Any binary model files you want to work with should first be imported into Blender.
You should also be familiar with the Daz OBJ importer (and additionally the FBX importer, less useful). This way you will know what Daz expects to import, so you will be able to identify what needs editing in the model. Likely there will need to be geometry groups defined with Daz-friendly names, and will have to be associated with material zones, so Daz can properly texture and display the model. You can export a similar Daz .duf model to OBJ and send it to Blender, then you can study how it looks in the scene graph and see what is supposed to be turned on and connected to what. When you get your own model ready to export, you can set it up in a similar way.
This is mostly why there's not more conversions and rips in the Daz universe, they are bloody tedious. It's plenty enough just when creating original content.
Also, I'm full-time again, so I have very little time to dig into it. But if I get some free time soon, I'll take a look at the ranch and see what needs to be done specifically, so you can start to see how it goes.
Also, google-fu. Look up any of a million convert-to-Daz tuts on YouTube. After a few different ones you'll notice common concepts, and the light bulb will flick on 🙂
September 1, 2022 at 10:17 PM #1862552@amberkat thanks for that, much appreciated 🙂
I did check the import settings on both DAZ and Blender but it didn't want to play either as OBJ or BLEND.
Thanks for offering to take a look and there's no rush honestly.
