What we really need is a better comment system for posts and not Disqus...
August 1, 2022 at 12:55 AM #1837685But why?
For chatting, for discussing stuff around daz studio, for sharing stuff, for having a backup server with zone members in case something happens to the site. You know? A safe haven.
It's far simpler to send a message in discord than opening a thread here and waiting for a response that might never come. Discord servers are far more active and usually only people that care about the topic are in them.
A simple example: A few weeks ago, Anja warned us not to reply in a topic about the infamous 3DUK, because it brought bad attention for the site in Google searches. This will never be a problem in a discord server as they are a private thing. Also, even if a discord server is in trouble, it won't make trouble for the main site.
August 1, 2022 at 1:51 AM #1837695Well, discord needs a functioning community for it to work properly. But I am confident there's enough people here who are regulars and who would love it if they gave it a shot.
Making a new discord account takes literally 1 minute and you can easily switch between different accounts now as of last update, you don't ever need to logout. You can even use web browser, you don't need to install the app.
There's already moderators in the forums, they could easily be moderators in there as well. As for how to verify someone and weed out potential trolls/vendors is by having only one person give out invitation links to the server via PM here on ZONE only to people who are known to the community. It's really not that hard.
I am not saying Discord should replace the forums. I am saying it should be an addition to people who are active and what to chat about similar topics, either vendors, models or otherwise. It's far more convenient. Also, the scrolling thing is only a problem in mega servers where there is over a thousand people who chat all the time. That won't be the case with 100 or less. Also, discord server channel separation makes that easy to not have a cluster of topics in one place and build up spam.
August 1, 2022 at 10:27 AM #1837811As much as I'd love a way to interact directly with GFX users in real time, I see some caveats.
1- Security will be badly compromised. No end-to-end encryption, data is stored, pictures are scanned (officially for children protection) but they never stop at that when it comes to eavesdrop. Words can be filtered, which means that your text entries are logged and scanned.
We, here, exchange pirated goods. If we do or discuss it en masse on Discord, how long do you think it'll take for the T-rex dung to hit the Airbus' reactor turbine?
It isn't paranoïa if they really are after you.
August 1, 2022 at 12:09 PM #1837856@ethiopia If I had the time to moderate one I wouldn't have made this topic to begin with. But I see nobody else cares. Unfortunate.
August 1, 2022 at 10:02 PM #1838065Who tried what and how did it fail exactly? I see absolutely no valid reason in @littlepleasures explanation. He only said he uses Discord for 1 on 1 chat with clients. I have a feeling most of you haven't actually used discord enough to make a compelling argument on why this is a bad idea, outside of the potential trolls and vendors which can easily be avoided if you make it a private server with private invites.
I am not going to argue with anyone though. I see there is not enough interest, so I drop my case. This topic can be locked now so I don't get notifications anymore. Thanks.
August 2, 2022 at 12:00 PM #1838315@littlepleasures Nah, you assume wrong. I don't really care. I just thought that the site would benefit from a private server with known people. If you personally don't like to use Discord then absolutely nobody is forcing you to do so, lol.
It might be a personal preference but it seems to be the prevailing preference among the members here.
What prevailing preference?! The ~3 people that took their time to debate with me on this? I doubt even 5% of the people visiting the site saw this topic because nearly nobody goes to the General chat in the forums.
August 2, 2022 at 2:23 PM #1838360Just tossing my hat in the ring, as someone that loves Discord, and someone that loves Daz, and someone that participates here fairly regularly...this is a bad idea.
For all the reasons stated above and more, a Discord server for a pirating community is a security nightmare. Also, the unofficial-but-lots-of-PAs-hang-out-there Daz discord exists and serves pretty much every need you'd have *outside of piracy*, and all it takes is one bad actor being in both the pirate Daz server and the "clean" one to see who else is in both, and blacklist them from the actually helpful one.
Secondly, infosec machine goes brrrr... Discord is a logged, unencrypted, and monitored service. Nothing posted on Discord should be treated as private communication; discussion of illegal activities doesn't belong there.
Just join the "clean" daz discord for your daz questions, I'd venture a good number of us are already in it, if we use discord at all.
August 2, 2022 at 6:40 PM #1838430Personally, I always find Discord more of a frustration than a benefit.
:0/
August 2, 2022 at 8:48 PM #1838476I have used (and still do) Discord extensively. It's a perfect mean of communication for activities that need real time interaction, with overlay capabilities that are perfect for games as an example.
Long time EvE Online player, as well as Infinite Lagrange and others, Discord saved my (and my corporation's) ass countless times specifically because it's real time coms. It can trigger reactions almost instantly... don't ask me own many times I woke up in the middle of the night... 🙂
But fail to login just for 24 or even 12 hours and you are confronted with hundreds of lines of history chat that honestly, being part of the CEO staff, I HAD TO READ, but that most of the base players did not.
As such, I doubt that it would be suited for our "activity" here, giving the staff just more reading and moderation time.
ON THE OTHER HAND, I understand @ace94 proposal because :
- it's a way to bond even closer and real time coms and reactions give you an even greater sense of friendship and tells you a lot about people's mind and personality depending on how they react to jokes and / or disagreements
- I also had the idea that, in case what happened to KAT would happen here, we could all fall back to this place and "reorganize" without loosing track of each others like I lost tracks of so many of you so many years ago now
I am not against the idea but can not say I am fully for it either. What I think is that we need a "backup-plan" in case this home of ours is shut down (unless we already have one ?). Is Discord the answer to this need ? I'm am not convinced but that's a solution we shouldn't rule out without considering it.
Math
August 2, 2022 at 9:31 PM #1838480There was one for that very purpose.
For quite a time some members were more active on that than here, which was counter-productive really.
It lasted a few months with relatively high activity, but then faded quite quickly.August 2, 2022 at 9:39 PM #1838484I indeed found trace of this Discord while reading the complete history of the General Chat (yes I did lol) and asked one of our member to invite me on it.
The answer was the same, it has faded away and, if it took over the actual forum, I can not say it's a bad thing. It should be complementary not a substitute 🙂August 5, 2022 at 3:01 AM #1842279In the other topic(s) it was already mentioned that there exists an official Zone discord, created with exactly the same intent, "safer" convo space, and meeting place if anything ever killed the blog.
It still exists.
It's been forgotten for some time, but it still is there, Tomsk still can be seen lurking online. Sadly though, nobody can issue invites to help start it back up (if that's what y'all want so badly :p ), so maybe we can hassle @Hunter to enable member invite generation, or at least put up a permanent invite code next to the Twitter feed so that those who want to dust it off can go do so.
That's assuming Hunter even remembers the login credentials (or even remembers that there's a discord lol)August 5, 2022 at 5:16 AM #1842768That discord was created by some user ... not me ...
We don't have any official discord. -
