I'm in a serious freak out mode today - my 4TB master Drive with ALL MY STUFF organized on it, EVERYTHING, lost its Master Boot Record and I am at a loss as to how to FIX IT.

It's apparently a Microsoft Windows 10 KNOWN error with using an EXTERNAL DRIVE bigger than 2TB.... that Windows sometimes doesn't release its death grip on the drive - even if you shut down the PC properly. The Hard Drive is external using a USB 3.0 connection.

This happened to me once before, and it fucked up my entire life for months.

This time the drive was almost 3.5TB full - and it's all GONE.

I had a massive panic attack last night as I have lost almost EVERYTHING.

Back a while ago, you could fix a boot record with a simple tool in Windows 7 but for drives less than or up to 2TB only. I have searched the internet for ANYTHING that will help me restore the MBR (Master Boot Record) of a 4TB Hard Drive and only get websites out of Russia and Eastern Europe telling me to pay them money before they can give me a tool to fix it.

And we know that 99% of those are scams. It's a KNOWN Microsoft 10 issue - and Microsoft has NO FIX FOR IT THEMSELVES...

I'm kind of staying away from everything at the moment as I am so upset and dealing with panic.

Maybe someone out there is a computer expert with experience in Data Recovery and can help me figure out how to get back what is still on the drive.

    Anyone? Please?

I had a similar issue with an external drive setup. It was configured in windows disc management for drives larger than 2tb. Anyway, my pc crashed and luckily I had backup. But after a full restore, windows did not recognize the external drives. I can't remember the name of the software but I used it to recover a lot of my daz stuff. It supposed to be used by the forensics and the FBI to recover "lost data". I will try to find out when I get home from work.

I have use this tool once to recover my MBR and was working fine.
Do not know how many TB I had in that time. But you can give it a try.
Try to backup your HD if that is possible before you start using tools.

I use the mini tool partition wizard software when dealing with drives. It has a built in Partition recovery tool... I wouldn't use any version of it higher than v9 though, if you're planning on using the free version, as that is the last one that has the OS migration available to free users. There is also the "Recuva" software, that is HD recovery software, that is supposed to be one of the best on the market... Last time I looked at it, the free version has a limit on how much data it will recover, where as the paid version doesn't. (Hence, the reason I prefer my Partition Wizard v9 free)

I used this to recover my files: https://www.easeus.com/?adbing&msclkid=47847d2534751ae3eafd23f2b2051c89&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=easeus%20search%20us&utm_term=easeus%20com&utm_content=easeus

Like @jozef said, "Try to backup your HD if that is possible before you start using tools." It takes a while to complete especially if it is a lot of files.

@creationz Thanks for that one - I will clone the drive as is, and try that program as well, see which one does better for me. Do you own the full version? does it have a file limit?

I used a cracked version and then deleted it once I was finished recovering files. Do a search and it should show up. I don't remember the site I got it from either.

It depends on what caused the error, but I've had a lot of luck in the past with this tool, including the restoring of a MBR on a drive that was 4 TB. It's free and a very powerful little program, highly recommended.

@sohjard I will look at that. Do I need to have a 2nd drive of the same size attached to copy the data over to? Like restoring a 4TB I need a 2nd 4TB attached which is empty to restore it to?

Or does it fix the MBR on the same drive?

I will move all the data from the drive then to multiple 2TB drives to be safe for the future.

    Please let me know.
    Thanks!

use a linux boot disk, after that you can copy over your "lost" files. dont use recover software, sometimes it will crosslink fileheaders to each other. You can try Easybcd, otherwise i have easyBCD recover discs.

It repairs the MBR of the same drive, at first it will try to recover it from the backup, if that fails it will try to rebuild it. I've only had that be not successful once, but that was when the issue was caused by a faulty docking station. You do not need to copy or backup any files for that process.

If it's not successful it won't do anything to the drive, so if it comes to that everything will be just as recoverable before it attempted to repair the MBR of the drive.

As for the future, I recommend back ups as opposed to multiple smaller drives--though having a separate drive for backups is a good idea. I have a backup I run about once a month for installation files, twice a month for the DAZ library folder (where everything is installed to) and then a daily one (more frequently during big projects) for my personally created files. I also save completed files (like characters and scenes) to a dropbox.

But...you need a "clearing tool".. If you dont desire the "folader" and data, you need a solver like . if you have a Win Stoarage , in Fat32, or NTFS, you can rebuild the table assignemet
