If that is the way it is going to go, it is getting ever worse for inter personal social skills.

For a few years now, I have seen groups of people sat at tables messing with phones rather than actually talking to people, even messaging people actually sat at the same table!

yup , that's what I'm talking about -lol u see it going all the time even in hospitals they will have a BIG sign that says turn phones/electronics off and what do u see ? ppl on their phones and ppl don't care if someone else's life maybe at stake and the hospital say that for a reason.

Too true. Apple once did a survey of their own employees sitting in the McFly's bar nearby asking them why they used their iPhone. There were about 200 people in the bar all looking at their iPhones and not engaging with ohers. The answer they got back was - they were using their iPhone to "meet people". Haha.

At least in this new 3d model people will actually have to look other people "in the eye" - or at least their avatar's eye (for the time being). Over time avatars will be replaced with the real thing.

And no, people will NOT have goggles strapped to their face. The company developing the industrial designs for some of these "AR glasses" is theItalian fashion design company Luxottica - who own Ray-Ban, Sunglasses Hut and just aboout every major fashion brand (Armani, Dior +90 more).

The way I look at it, when major technologies like this change, it gives consumers much more power. If the BIG TECH companies don't give us what we want, we have the opportunity to replace them.

Unfortunately, loss of inter personal social skills is potentially very damaging to society as a whole.

Short of fritzing everybody's smart phone, I am unsure what can be done about it.

My personal belief is that the period of change between the (dysfunctional) Wordwide Web and the - as yet undefined - Metaverse gives us a chance to change the rules. There will be dozens/hundreds of new companies offering thousands of new applications. We have the chance to make it what we want, not be pushed around by Big Tech.

That's the plan. But it's all a conspiracy for anyone that doesn't do a little research. I recommend everyone read The Fourth Industrial Reveolution to see where it's all headed.

@plonquer Except Laptops haven't displaced PC's nor has mobile displaced laptops. They are all still widely in use for the various tasks that they are each good at. You don't see many people in college using their phones to take notes or write essays. The laptop displaced pen and paper notebooks, not a PC.

Like VR gaming, the Metaverse will likely be nothing more than a niche thing. If it hasn't taken off massively since Second Life, and all the other 3D avatar programs, I don't think it will. It's nothing new, and yet Facebook and MS, and all these companies are acting like it is.

One thing that no-one has mentioned is VR motion-sickness. I've had a Quest 2 sitting unused in my draw for the last six months because after five minutes of being 'in' a VR game, I want to hurl my guts up. I've never suffered from motion sickness before, but VR does me in big time and I don't have the time to spend training my brain to get over it or dealing with the nausea while I do.

    ,

We have the chance to make it what we want, not be pushed around by Big Tech.

Except that it'll be 'Big Tech' bringing the technology to the masses. You'll need to buy your VR headset somewhere and companies like FB\Meta are the ones producing and selling them a price no-one else can beat because they make their money with the data you give them every time you strap the thing to your forehead, not from the device or the software running on it. You already need a active FB account to use an Oculus Quest headset, and FB have effectively bricked the headsets of people signing up with fake accounts. If you've got a smartphone, Apple or Google know what time you leave the house to go work, what route you take, how many times a week you buy a coffee from Starbucks and how often you message your mum and both sell that data to others and use it to try and sell you stuff directly. Now imagine how excited the marketing teams are about being able to fill the 'metaverse' with targeted ads that only you can see as well as using eye-tracking to see what ads you spend the most time looking at. No 'small tech' company is going to get a look in, FB and Google etc can literally throw billions of dollars away to make their services free, not to mention buying out competitors or more underhand stuff, because if you're not paying for a product you are the product.

"because if you’re not paying for a product you are the product."

That is 100% correct. But you may have noticed that the companies being hauled up in front of the US Congress are Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Google. All of these "monetise" the user experience of their own customers. Why no Microsoft? Because Microsoft already pledged they will NEVER monetise their customers expeience. And I don't think any of these companies are too big to fail. The web is wide open for new players. Look at Tik-Tok.

When new "Metaverse" experiences come online many companies will be forced to acknowledge "Personal Data Sovereignty". In other words the User Experience belongs to the User, not to Facebook/Amazon/Google/Apple. Over the next few years the laws WILL be changed to tighten this up. I think this will shut down the "you are the product" game. Can only hope.

I think everyone should read what the metaverse is. Its not nfts or about nfts. The tldr is metaverse will be an iconic world where the individual will be able to do his day to day business without the need to physically be on site. In this "world" your avatar will be you. Like a giant mmo where you will be you and your "gold" will be your real life money 😛 (dungeons to grind gold not included)

Something like second life, only in first person.

Facebook has already jumped the meta wagon and will probably lead when meta becomes a thing. As will all things meta will be and bring, both good and bad.

I think there will be more BAD then GOOD there has already been a lot of suicides, murders and frauds because of social media and that's what this would basically be aimed at and would not one death out-weigh any "good" that it would bring, it's not like it would be a cure for cancer or something , it's so ppl can use a avatar in vr that's all it is and I don't know of ANY jobs where having an avatar would help u do ur job better if anything it would do just the opposite your avatar is going to do ur work for u --LOL
Yes there are other games and community's that already use this tech and they ALL have the same thing in common they all are based on making money from avatars, clothing , hair , homes and animations subscription cost each month/year ect.. it all cost $ that's the big picture for the way the Metavers will be just like in Secondlife , 3DXCHAT and others.

    @Plonquer totally agreed.

@axllls also agreed. People have always escaped into virtual realities. Reading a book is a virtual reality. Playing a Fantasy Role playing game is a virtual reality. It is the FIRST way that kids play, when they assume the identities of their favorite characters - super heroes, and recreate the stories they've read or watched.

Digital virtual reality has existed since at LEAST the first time two people sat at an Atari 2600 and pretended to be tank operators.

This is just *more immersive* and with potential real-world benefits. I don't think we'll know what will be the big breakthrough - the Facebook/Social Media revolution that VR brings - but it probably isn't something we can imagine - anymore than you could have imagined Facebook in 1992.

But whatever it is, it is coming.

Also, the idea of NFTs is not an inherently bad or evil thing. Everyone seems to think they're going to give CORPORATION control over artists...

And that is possible. But it also can give the ARTIST control over corporations. The artists just need to leverage NFTs so that companies get the NFT, but *not* the right to the art. Right now - it doesn't often work that way.

But - these things are evolving. That is the thing that actually irks me about the way people are responding to these things. Rather than seeing the potential benefits and trying to ensure that those benefits happen - they're taking this glass-half-empty approach. NTFs exist as an *idea* because the problem is real. The people hating on NFTs all think NFTs are a bad solution - but they *don't have any solution at all*.

I hate this in the workplace - there is always that one guy that wants to shoot down every idea to every problem the company faces - but never has any ALTERNATIVES to offer. They don't know what *will* work... but they always seem to be certain what *won't*.
