    Sometimes, when your eyes are too focused on one thing (in this case Daz Studio), you forget what's actually happening around you.

    Time for Daz to step up. Oh, wait...that ship has sailed a long time ago...

    DAZ continues to be about image rendering, not animation. If someone wants to get into animation, avoid DS. Hopefully, UE pushes Blender to keep innovating. Like you said, that ship for DS sailed long ago.

    Looks good and tempting, but creating a movie.... It probably is not so simple as they make it out to be

    Okay, I'll be that one person here...

    DAZ Studio was designed to be a Character Creator. So I don't know what they're meant to step their game up to compared to a software like Unreal-Engine.

    If I'm not mistaken, but that has always been the case for DAZ. Anyone that is serious about getting into animating any 3D assets, it's always been advised to use other tools that is designed specifically to create and/or manipulate animation data. (E.g: like Motion-builder or Cascadeur)

    Blender is a modeling application used to create custom 3d assets which can then be imported into Unreal-Engine.

    Unreal-Engine is a real time rendering engine used as a foundation for developers to build their product that requires real time user interaction in a illusion medium.

    ---------------------------

    Can you model custom detailed assets in Unreal-Engine? Yeah you can try... but people would recommend you use Maya, Blender, 3DS Max or other actual modeling software. And they'll look at you like your crazy or trying to complete some obscure challenge like painting the mona lisa in Microsoft Paint.

    Can you do real-time rendering in Blender? or 3DS Max? I don't know for blender as I never tried, but you can in 3DS Max (if you call Nitrous Viewport real-time). But if you told me you're trying to create a real-time game engine inside the Blender or 3DS Max viewport, I'm going to look at you sideways.

    The same logic should apply to DAZ Studio

    Can you create great looking animations within DAZ Studio? Yeah, you can try. But the program wasn't built on the idea of doing that. So you're going to spending A TON of time manipulating your assets in the software as oppose to someone who spent less time in something like MotionBuilder or Cascaduer.

    Almost every computer software today has a core purpose where people will recommended you use that software for it's core purpose. Every software today also tends to have additional features that either compliment that core purpose or help the end-user to quickly tackle other tasks that plays into the core purpose.

    Just because the software can do those additional tasks doesn't mean it's the best tool to do so. Expecting that software to be the swiss army knife in all things computer graphics seems silly to me.

    A good point well made. Where Daz Studio is at its strongest, is in its designed purpose.

    An asset manipulator for single frame renders, and it's price point is another.

    Blender is the swiss army knife. It does almost everything, from creation to rendering to animation. It does all of these things reasonably well. Sure, there are other solutions that do any of these things better than Blender, but very few that do all of these things even as well as Blender, much less better. If you're not making cinematic films for a living, Blender will more than exceed the needs you have. Plus, the Blender community is more chill than all the others, it's free and the addons are usually cheap has heck. Added bonus for Blender: in my experience, it's not a resource hog like most of the others are.

    UE is, obviously, a gaming solution. That's a whole different planet than making animations or renders. Apples and oranges.

    A Blenderholic here. Being free is pretty great, and the community is wildly enthusiastic and eager to help.

    @kelsie332 I think you are missing the part where UE has features that overlap with UE and that could be implement in a theoretical new daz studio.

    Real Time rendering (filament anyone?). Obviously, I am indicating the video to show how far real-time has gotten, to the point of having feature that beat slower rendering.

    Musculature. A feature that Daz should have....

    Hair...another feature that daz is sorely lacking.

    Character Creator.

    That's where it needs to step up.

    As I said, Daz is sorely technology-wise.

    Can you do real-time rendering in Blender?
    Yes, it uses Evee, which is based off UE technology.

    @eelgoo
    One word for you....dforce 🙂

    @ulysses
    Gaming and movie solution nowadays. And, if you can make movies, you can make stills 😉 Utilizing it's nanite/lumen tech would be a great thing for a daz studio replacer imo.

    @ethiopia
    Honestly, I am confused as to why Daz hasn't switched to a Blender backend yet.

    @legolas18 I feel like I didn't miss anyhting. (This may sound mean and I I'm not trying to be.) But the way your first post was constructed, it appeared as if you're comparing DAZ to Unreal-Engine and making sound as if everything that Unreal has going on are items DAZ needed to do as well.

    I came to that conclusion because you didn't say what exactly DAZ was missing in regards to the video you posted. Your first post didn't have any specifics about what DAZ needed to step their game up on.

    If you said, "Look at what Unreal has coming down the pipes, DAZ should try to implement the Musculature and add hair creation tools." I would somewhat agree with you.

    -------------------------

    The Musculature feature is neat and would be a nice addition to DAZ.

    But hair creation seems a lot more involved and DAZ's UI just seems to clunky for such a task. I honestly would just prefer to create such objects like hair or other custom assets in a proper modeling tool like blender or 3ds max. Their UIs are properly fleshed out to handle such operations. Once done then I'll export into DAZ for the scene drafting or final renders.

    What is the "muscular feature" everyone is talking about? DAZ has muscle morphings if that is what you mean, or is the unreal feature something else?

    @gts6 It was introduced as a Maya add-on a few years back to create realistic muscle simulations. It used to require an awful amount of computation to simulate, and now UE introduced the real-time version.

    Daz implements a morph blending / stretching technique instead.

    @kelsie332
    No worries. As for the hair implementation, there are both ready-made hairs, or those made in Maya or Blender. I used them, and the real-time ones look better than the rendered ones in daz, sadly enough.

    @hfofo
    I am sure you are...UE has implemented a lot of AI integration in environment creation and rendering.

    I never use dforce anymore. It is time consuming & lacks reliability & repeatability. :0/

    I would much rather use a dynamic morph.

    Obviously, the requirements & usefulness differ between single frame renders & animation.

    🙂
