NVIDIA is discontinuing the 4090. There is talk that NVIDIA will market the GB202-300-A1 as something like the Quadro, ie, separate from the 5xxx stack with a price to match. The 4090 was almost that already.I have used an even more outdated machine than what Gaver is talking about (not home sorry I don't have the details) on an Asus laptop I bought in 2021 and have done quite a fair number of 4K renders. What I found most important is the lighting, not overpowering the processors with a hughe amount of resources (like max 3 Genesis 8 per scene) and of course letting time do its work (quality limit off, max time 1million, max iterations 1million) and just cancelling and saving image when satisfied with the result. It often took 10 to 20 hours for a 4K but most of the time it was worth the results. But I found it a bit restraining, so now I'm working on a custom Titan desktop.
Seems the most economical way to get a new 4090 is to get a prebuild from places like newegg. They can be found for less than $3000 (US) and with the 4090's still going for around $2K, you get a darn good, brand new gaming desktop with the top of the line GPU for about $700 more. I'm still waiting for the 4070ti to go down to $500. My current graphics desktop still has a 1080ti, which is somewhat adequate for Blender/DS, but crawls for adobe and for video/image processing with AI. I'm waiting for black friday or cyber monday and hoping I can pick up a prebuilt with a 4090 and add a 4070ti for my old PC for less than $3K total. I've built about a dozen PCs over the years and I just don't want to do it anymore.
I find that creating the scene is more fun than getting a render and often, a screen capture is good enough. I was chatting with someone here years ago and we called it 'playing with dolls'. For me, the clothes are the important part and I still mostly use Vicky Four and her extensive wardrobe and mountain of accessories. Architecture is another big draw. When I do render, I set it to go then use my older desktop for online stuff and don't much care if the render takes a day or two (or four).

I did that for my 4070 because they weren't selling them separately and my old sys wasn't up to handling one.
The only way I could ever get any xx90 card would be to.... neko frank 🙂
