Looking for help with backgrounds

So i am trying to create a scene of looking from a balcony with either a city scape or mountains in the background.i get confused on if it is a prop or a dome needed for this background image. i have used a prop for it but sometimes it just does not fit with its looks. is there any tutorials out there for creating something like this. thanks
