So I recently grabbed most of the kitbash kit cities. Unfortunately, most are basically useless due to the fact that all the pieces are one object, and not separated into multiple pieces, ie individual bldgs.
I was able to separate the Egyptian kit and FairyTale kits only, using Bryce and ungrouping, and then saving each piece. But the rest are basically just one object. Neo Tokyo has multiple buildings, but only 3 objects so you cant use individual buildings alone. Art Deco is the same.
Gothic won't even load because its too big as 1 file and keeps crashing Bryce.
I don't know if these kits were put together like this by KB3D or another sharer.
However, the site says these kits are usable in all 3D software. So I'm presuming that KB3D didn't do this themselves.Anyone else have any experience with these kits?
March 15, 2019 at 5:20 AM #998361Was considering using one eventually. Sux to know most are near pointless to difficult to use.
March 15, 2019 at 6:01 AM #998386This is generally how KB3D kits arrive, along with other kitbash products (Vitaly Bulgarov for example) and because of this I've had to teach myself how to handle these files and make them useful using Blender.
My workflow is to open the main file in one instance of Blender, box select the object i want and copy and paste it into another instance of Blender. After this I do a bit of tidying up (Origin to 3D cursor, geometry to origin, scaling, additional material zones if necessary etc.) then save it out as an FBX. All told takes about 3 minutes per object.
Happy to help if you need further details.
March 15, 2019 at 7:04 PM #999068Thanks for the feedback. GREATLY appreciated..
I had 3D max but it plain refuses to even load anymore. I have Blender but am not familiar with it.
@drayu I might take you up on that as I know nothing about Blender.
@littlepleasures I agree with you on Bryces outdated engines. But it was my first 3D sofware back in the 90s and there is still a lot one can do with it. It has its pros and cons like everything else. Though I do wish it could handle higher loads.March 17, 2019 at 8:48 PM #1001834@littlepleasures I think I've had Blender almost as long as I've been using Bryce. Just never used it. Though I keep upgrading.
Ahh.. You understand all the condescending frowny faces when mentioning Daz/Poser. Well, I get it for Poser , which I don't use, and people don't know what DS is. But I blame it on all the many years of low quality and the amount of crap art pumped out by non talented wanna be's that get supported by other non talented wanna be's, which in turn just pushes the true artists to the bottom where they never get seen.
Fortunately, better textures have been being made, along with Iray with DS so quality has risen.I basically haven't done any traditional drawing/painting for the past 2 years since the wife left me. So I got back into 3D to fill the void. I haven't even done any shows or art panels. I basically dropped off the map and haven't even spoken to anyone. I just hide in my studio day and night playing with 3D crap. Hopefully learning.
I opened up Gothic in Cinema4D last night. Weird that everything is separated. I'm not getting why that is. OH well. I should be able to set up a scene in C4D and export. More experimentation. 🙂
April 3, 2019 at 10:53 AM #1024496I've found Marmoset Toolbag 3 the most useful program for manipulating these sets. You load the entire set, delete what you don't want, duplicate, regroup, manipulate and so on, then export the whole thing back out exactly as you want it, ready for use in whatever you want.
April 3, 2019 at 1:57 PM #1024687Awesome! Look forward to seeing it posted.
April 3, 2019 at 4:56 PM #1024905Toolbag is already available on here
https://zonegfx.com/marmoset-toolbag-3-0-3/
but you can probably find a newer version somewhere... 😉
April 3, 2019 at 6:39 PM #1025015@imata Thats what I do with C4D. Only, the past few weeks I've been making my own models. 2 mega cities . Ancient Egyptian and Scifi Future Egyptian.

March 11, 2020 at 11:39 PM #1511846Almost all kitbash assets come as one big fbx or obj file. The entire file uploads as one into UnReal or Unity or other 3D software and then you make instances of them as they're individually named. For Poser/Daz this is somewhat inconvenient as they don't work that way but all Kitbash3D models are already UV mapped (and most have textures), you just match the texture with the material zone name. I import the original obj's into Maya and then export each individual asset out as solo obj and then bring them in as props.
I was actually toying with the idea of converting the Kitbash3d kits into corresponding prop sets for Poser with the materials already added so you could just unzip them into your runtime and they'd be ready to go but wasn't sure if there would be any interest in that.
ALSO Blender is excellent for converting stl's into objects, and 3D printable stl's are insanely popular right now and thousands are available for free and there are many low cost Kickstarters that reward with a ton of themed stls.
March 20, 2020 at 7:34 AM #1524460Hi guys, I got emailed a code from Kitbash3d:
Use "brightartdarktimes" as a discount code at the checkout to get Utopia for free.
Might be worth trying it on a different kit first, see if it works 😉
