...the models posted lately are more and more ridiculous, clumsy, superficially worked and self-important?

Don't blame the posters Fred, they didn't make them. I've reached the stage where I deliberately skip the Daz shop when I go there for the forums. The models are cringeworthy, repetitions, and quite frankly embarrassing. Twelve months since I abandoned DS and moved on to greener fields. Instead of cringeworthy I now get spongeworthy 😁.

I think the biggest Problem is the strict split between users and content creators in Studio.

Back in the (Poser) days, the community consisted out of much more "hobbyist tinkerers".
A lot of them just creating things for the sheer joy of creating. So they didn't mind how long it took to finish a product.
Even the professionals didn't treat Poser as a "money making machine" only, and created things they could enjoy themselves.

DAZ OTOH focused on making content creation as easy and as streamlined as possible. That's why for example G9 features a completely uniform mesh topology.
This is great for professsional 3D artists who are "fluent" with ZBrush, but it makes her/him basically useless for the casual user.
To make G9 come "alive", you do need morphpacks and especially HD morphs.
Victoria 2 or Michael 2 OTOH were much more complete, because all the options were built right into the mesh. (And yes, V3 and M3 needed external morph packs, but V3RR and M3RR were also "complete". And quite popular in Japan, btw)

Anyway, my point is, everything in Studio is tailored for easy content creation. But only for professional 3D artists. (While the hobbiysts are "locked out")

These "modern type" of professional content creators are in it for the money. That's why they only create what sells.
And they keep quality to the bare minimum, because any additional hour spent means less return of investment.
Add to that modern clothing creation engines that are based on dynamic clothing simulations instead of having to actually sculpt every fold and detail in a clothing item by hand, and you know where the "sameness" and "uninspiredness" comes from.

There are still nice things out there, and I still have Studio installed so I can donwnload and extract the occasional Studio prop or clothing, but all in all, that's one of the reasons I decided to built myself a "vintage Poser runtime" and decided to spend my time with figures and items that were for the most part made because their creator simply enjoyed making them.

    A small example:
Go to ShareCG and search for "The Many Faces of Moggadeet".
These were all done with V3 and M3 and their default morphpacks. No custom ZBrush morphs.
That means, EVERYBODY could do that.
Of course not everybody was as talented as Moggadeet, but if you really wanted, and had the patience, you could do that.
I spent countless hours creating new faces for V3RR and M3RR, often even using dozends of magnets on top of the morphs to create something new.
And of course the Morphbrush, once it had matured enough to be useable.
(Doesn't Studio have a similar tool now as a plugin?)

I didn't like V4/M4 very much, very hard to get rid of their default looks, Genesis 1 I liked because of all the monsters it could be turned into. G2 wasn't bad either (V6 was very pretty IMO), but then I lost interrest.
Every little variation was now a premade character you had to buy.
The "tinker friendly" "universal figure" was gone. (Unless you were a professional with access to the HD tools and ZBrush)

While I use Studio, my Poser items see a lot of use because I Luuuuv Vicky Fourpoittwoplusplus and her harddrive choking wardrobe and accessory collection. There's a few character sets that make Vicky truly unique and if you're a lingerie fan you'll recognize a few real items that where painstakingly modeled buy... who was it?...Hongdu or something? yup I agree, most of the new stuff is crap although there's a few bits of architecture that are darned nice.

Lets add to that the flood of free items grabbed from kemono and shared here for points...

@ethiopia - Hongyu is the gent I believe you're looking for. BAT used to be pretty good at it as well.

    @frederrick
    - funny you should mention that; I'm finding that, of all things, Renderhub is a place where a lot of unique characters are coming out - between the dude who went nuts making a ton of Hindi characters, to the toon crowd who often do a bang-up job (not, not the cheap-ass game-rippers like 3DUK, I mean vendors like ugarman and ROMFX), to HumanXYStudio (pricey, but good), and more. You really have to sort through the manure to find the diamonds on that site, but they are in there. DAZ is too corporate, Renderotica is oriented around one thing (worse, the characters all look the same), and Renderosity's store is coded by a braindead chimp to the point where you can't find anything in it.

BTW, if anyone knows of a better all-rounder store (that isn't nebulized like Patreon, Fanbox, or Gumroad), please tell me.
