Heavy sigh and good day ZoneGFX. I will disclaim this first. I am in no way tired of sharing my Asus Republic of Gamers VW-71 with one of my old shipmates, however... I have been blessed with the knowledge of computers. Or let me put it in perspective; Computers don't hate me. MacBooks are no exception. I've recently fixed a bunch of tablets for a fellow grandparent and they gave me their old MacBook Pro in appreciation for it. I am not a Apple-head but do know what is inside it.
It is a MacBook Pro mid 2012 with a 2.5 ghz core i5 processor. It has 16 gigs of DDR3L memory and a 256 gigabyte Solid State Hard drive. The video on it is my concern. It has Intel HD Graphics 4000 with 1536 megabyte graphics. Knowing he knows less about 3D art than I but is a very talented artist, would this machine be sufficient for someone just starting out on Daz3d Studio Pro 4 and Poser 11 Pro? Please, I appreciate and respect your inputs. Thank you.March 20, 2018 at 6:14 PM #539669Arthur, that MacBook will be a pretty good starter machine for someone just getting into 3D (and it should easily run the latest D|S and Poser versions, though IRAY capability is likely out of the question), but it's probably a little too old to be a super-effective rendering platform and there's obviously limited storage with that SSD. Still, it's a solid, reliable machine for someone starting out. Not to start a flame war, but Macs seem to have a longer useful life than PCs ... one of my machines is a 2010 MacPro with 12TB of storage, 32GB RAM and a 1TB video card, and the sucker runs like a champ (up and running 24hr/day) as my media server and back-up renderer.
Cheers and thanks for your service!

March 20, 2018 at 7:03 PM #539714Not sure how stuff is now but use to be, you could get 3 times the machine at half the price of a mac when buying PC.
Unless youre doing professional work for a company, id never recommend mac anything. Its way to easy to get software and games for a PC. I had tp junp through hoops to burn music to my old iphone. On my Samsung its drag and drop. fk apple.
March 20, 2018 at 7:04 PM #539718Thank you @hocko, I will see about hunting down a 500 gig ssd instead. Right now, I've got a slim Seagate 5400 rpm drive and possibly one 7200 rpm standard height Seagate drive. My wife's hobby is donating computers to underprivileged students. Since it all comes out of pocket we've got to be even more sensible about it. I got laid up and was unable to find them, then we adopted a homeless family. As soon as my extended family get on their feet I should get back in to the routine I had before they moved in. That is the other reason I took up interest in 3D artistry.
more information has been redactedMarch 20, 2018 at 7:08 PM #539719@d0gg0d My sentiments exactly. I was dabbling in Hackintosh or Hackbooks at one point. I fail to see the big deal. But then again I've only dealt with low end units. Some of their stuff costs ten thousand US dollars.
What do you think of my new font?
I just like the way that looks. It's probably stressing the servers.
"what's he saying?" "What's he saying?" One can interpret that as art as well.
3-D RedactedMarch 21, 2018 at 1:34 AM #540077Hello, Link. I'm certainly glad 3dzone.link is back up for now. In my quest for another SSD drive I came across a Lenovo Ideapad S510p with touchscreen. It has an intel core i3-4010u and an Intel HD 4400 graphics, 8 gigs of ddr3l memory and 500 Gig hard drive.
If you didn't know by now I plan on giving either to my friend as a going away present when he leaves for the West Coast this summer. I wish him well.
The Lenovo I just picked up for under $50 because it didn't have a hard drive and the bezel is cracked. If this would be better than the MacBook Pro that would be great. It won't be the first time I've sold a MacBook pro to have spending money to fix MANY Windows based units. Current market value as is in my area is: $750 on (https://everymac.com/systems/apple/macbook_pro/specs/macbook-pro-core-i5-2.5-13-mid-2012-unibody-usb3-specs.html)I will pose the question in this way.
"would this be a better machine for someone learning 3D art Daz3D and Poser over that aforementioned MacBook Pro?" No hurry on this question. Thank you.March 21, 2018 at 2:19 PM #540601I honestly know nothing about mac or the Lenovo, only ever had windows computers. Only thing I do now is that most laptops have the hd graphic card soldered in which means you cant use dforce. Best thing would be to check the specs for daz and poser. Personally I would steer away from mac, only because you have a harder time getting programs the way we do for them.
March 21, 2018 at 2:34 PM #540609Thank you @Para. Lenovo here in the US is made in China Windows-based computer company. It does have the intel HD graphics soldered in (HD-4400). As does the MacBook (I believe) I guess I can take apart the macbook just to see if the card (intel HD-4000 video card) as well. It will be for someone just learning 3D art. I'm in no way an expert in 3D but am familiar with most software and hardware doings. Have a wonderful day. I'm hunting down that converter as we speak so I'll let you know if I'm successful later on.
March 21, 2018 at 2:40 PM #540617My laptop had the card soldered in, I did try to delete the drivers and install normal graphics, luckily I asked here and did back up my laptop as advised or I would have been in a bit of a pickle as after I uninstalled the drivers it wouldnt let me install the normal drivers and nor would it let my update the hd back to where it was. Just for learning, I would probably go the lenovo as that graphic card is higher than the one I have and although it struggles now with iray, it is not so bad with 3delight
March 21, 2018 at 8:06 PM #540955Again, I didn't intend to start a platform war here with my response to Arthur. My platform of choice is Mac, and I've used many iterations of PC/Windows over the years. There have been so many false negative claims out there about Macs from PC users that I've learned to overlook them and not get all bent out of shape based on my platform preference. In my years of experience on PCs and Macs (and it goes way back into the 1970s), the vast majority of PC folks don't often have much, if any, experience with Macs (the most common exposure seems limited to having seen prices on such). And, yes, Mac users can be platform-arrogant but so can PC users. Arthur simply asked if the MacBook was a decent starter machine for a 3D beginner and my answer was yes. As long as you can do the work you need/want to do on your platform of choice, more power to you ... live and let live! 🙂
March 22, 2018 at 12:28 AM #541159Thank you @hocko. My sentiments exactly. I've just got spoiled with touchscreens and right-clicking on my mouse that Windows allows me to do. I learned computers with punch cards and making my own circuit boards. Every time I come across a Mac or a MacBook I'll get frustrated and revert to my nearest Windows machine. Like I mentioned, it's almost money in the bank when I acquire or buy on the cheap a Mac, MacBook or MacBook Pro. I'm bound to get at least five similarly built Windows machines. Being on a fixed income and having a beloved better half that wants 5 or 10 units for this school or that school, it was easier for me to fix and upgrade a Windows unit. On a side note, about the time we stopped for the before-mentioned reasons, Windows decided to stop giving the Windows 10 upgrade free here. Having a good friend whom Beta-tested Windows since 1.1 I became familiar with a program called Windows Loader v2.2 by Daz. However the beancounters at Microsoft saw a surge in persons acquiring legitimate Windows 7 keys and in turn upgrading machines all the way up to Windows 10. I scavenged tons of memory and discarded hard drives just to upgrade all the machines I had stockpiled. Just before my guests moved in, we wound up donating the last ten units to my wife's alma-mater. Since I'm getting this machine ready for my friend that is the very same reason I stopped working on computers, I remembered I had been given that MBP as a thank you gift for someone buying a bunch of similar tablets for all his grandchildren. It took me a month just upgrading them, downloading and installing the software. Lots of freeware for touchscreen Windows-based stuff. I'd hate to pay his ABCMouse or Amazon Prime bills. Because he specifically wanted those on each as well. I'm glad he's generous. So I am inclined to give that MBP to my old shipmate and friend. I hope he is able to turn his artistic talents to 3D works of Art. Thank you for your Apple insight.
March 22, 2018 at 1:10 AM #541196Macs would probably not still be around if they were a poor system. And from what little I know they are almost always used in photography and most anything to do with graphics on corporate levels.
I also know that in every forum or web site ive ever been on in my 30ish years of pirating. Mac software was scarce.
When does it com out for mac?
Does anyone have this for mac>
Is this made for mac?
Will someone PLEASE upload this for mac.
ect...So yes Mac is a well thought out computer. It looks pretty. And though it may last longer, a 5 year old system is already out of date.
Ive often wanted to try a mac since i like photography. But price, software availability, game availability and raw power for price have kept me from doing so.
After owning an Iphone and seeing how apple controls their hardware/software I will more than likely never own one.
So take this into account before you decide to buy. Apple to me is a company and Personal Computer (PC) is just that. If money were no object the I would possibly get a top of the line apple for graphics. BUT i would buy a fricking SMOKING system PC for online gaming also.
March 22, 2018 at 1:27 AM #541211Thank you. I grew up too soon. I gave up on gaming when I couldn't get out of Castle Wolfenstein in 1992. I was even using c:\wolfenstein/goobers and having the maps to boot. (http://3d.wolfenstein.com/game_NA.php) Still love that game.
March 22, 2018 at 1:46 AM #541231I'm with @d0gg0d on this one. My Name IRL is Mac, yet I can't stand Macs. At all. Toooo OEM, too hard to customize, upgrades are expensive. Software is scarce. You'll save money and hassle if you stay clear of Apple. Ever own an apple product and have to get parts, or get it fixed??? I've tried and tried to like them, there is a reason why on my network we have 40,000 client machines, and less than 50 are Macs (but they are the Defense Media Deptartment... those people are hard coded to Macs)
I have sworn by PCS and will, with the same money spent on a Mac, build a PC machine that will run circles around it. And spend a few more dollars, and you'll have a dream machine.
Honestly, they are OK. But it is a laptop as well. Guess it comes down to what kind of GPU is in the machine, and how much ram on the GPU. Of course you can CPU render as well, but it'll just take longer.
Disclaimer: I've never pirated, so i wouldn't know about pirate software sites or anything. (cough cough)
March 22, 2018 at 1:48 AM #541233@arthurgarcia hahaha Wolfenstien!!!!!! I remember my girlfriend back then bought that for me lol... memories
