My HD with all my assets died, I'm in the process of recovering it, but I'd like to know how finicky DAZ is regarding where the files are. If they are in base folders but not the same ones as before, will it be able to load characters and scenes I've saved if their component elements have been moved?
Will it tell me that it can't find them, same it does with say, a missing texture in an improperly installed .zip?
Additionally, do you all find a performance difference, in scene creating or rendering, in having the assets on a SSD vs. a SATA drive?
This is pain, there is so much on that drive it is going to take forever.
January 22, 2019 at 6:32 PM #930943I'm no expert on this subject, but from the experience i had, yes, saved scenes and characters are finicky with where the assets are when you are loading them.
Because from what i understand, i think when you save a scene, it's not actually just saving the object, it's also saving the path for every object and their texture where they were at that moment.Example: Let's say i had a custom V4 character with morph apply to her and geared with some clothing. But from some reason, i didn't liked the makeup on the texture of her face. And went into the file of that skin texture, took the face portion of that skin, edited it in a picture editing program and saved it back (under a different name: V4Face01 for example) in the same folder.
Then i save my scene with that character like that.Well, even if i never touch that scene again, and for some reason a long time later i decide to reedit that custome file and i change it's name (For V4Face02) or i keep it the same name but change it's emplacement, when i'll reupload that scene, it'll try to reupload the exact same file name for texture it had before. And it'll still look at the exact same place. If the file has changed name or changed place, it'll give a error message saying " V4Face01.jpg is missing "
Then you'll have the choice to cancel the scene loading or just skip it.Your scene and character will load, but for every texture missing, it'll just put the "blank/no texture" default texture on character and object until you go back in the surface setting and correct the path of the file. (Or you go back in your folder in your hardrive and put the file at the same place it was recorded before.)
For entire object missing, it'll bug a little more and fill the object place with block of polygone. It's a bit freaky.Has for SSD vs SATA: I don't think having a SSD has any impact on your scene speed creation and rendering. This is that i have a SSD and i think it's mainly your cpu strengh, memory and graphic card that impact those.
What i saw though, it's SSD do impact a little on scene loading and when you have to change place/ dump tons of GB of files on your hard drive.
If you have a really really really heavy scene saved in your folder, with 4 or more character fully clothed with accessory, with a full large scene with a full house or even more like multiple house, trees, ect...and lighting. Then yes, Daz will load that scene faster in your work space.Moving tons of GB of Daz asset from one place to another on a SSD is also defenitly faster.
January 22, 2019 at 9:48 PM #931111Right, so I'll replace it with a SATA drive then, looking into NAS to do a small render farm anyway.
So as long as the base drives are similarly structured, in theory I should be able to open projects. If they used sliders from a character bundle that is now in a different location, as long as those are loaded into DAZ's known content folders, they should work?
Mind you, I'll find out soon enough, anyway.
Who'd like 20,000 points and a free DAZ shop item to do this all for me?
