Today I decided to check Genesis 8.1 and Victoria 8.1 for the first time.
I have been ignoring them since they were released,
simply because I thought they would work with Iray material only,
which my PC can't handle: I can only render in 3Delight.
But I got curious about the fact that G8.1 can use both female and male genitalia,
which means something to someone like me, creating transgender characters,
so I thought I'd give it a shot,
and if that's the case, I can find a way to convert Iray into 3Delight anyway.
So I got both the Victoria 8.1 Loving Life Bundle and the Victoria 8.1 University Bundle
and installed the contents in my Library. But I didn't check them right away.
I spent all day looking for some more stuff for 8.1, watching videos and reading reviews.

After a few hours and some new information, I had a terrible thought: Genesis 8.1 will only work on DAZ 4.15?
That would be a problem because I have the 4.11 version.

I started my DAZ and looked under Genesis 8 Female Characters. Victoria 8.1's pic was there.
But I didn't load her right away. I thought I'd check my Smart Content first, I was expecting to find a Genesis 8.1 figure there. I didn't. And that didn't seem to be a good thing.

Back to my Genesis 8 female characters, I said what the hell, let's load her and see what happens.
So I clicked her pic and then Merge into Scene.
I got this "Missing Files" window.
    https://gyazo.com/f1aca1952fa31ba113fa9cd79d84a3d8
Mu first reaction was to close that window. When I did, something loaded, but it wasn't human.
It looked more like a grey robot made out of simple cubes. I wish I had saved a pic for you to see. I just shut down my DAZ.
But I never give up, so I decided to try again. I started DAZ and tried to load Vicky 8.1 again.
And yes I got the same "Missing Files" window.
    https://gyazo.com/05115ef0e8f7c9da3f586e52707fc429
I said ok, nobody said it was easy. Let's see our options here. I could either SKIP the message or...INSTALL THE MISSING FILES. So I decided to install them and see what happened.
    https://gyazo.com/5c80ee871b1755572152b919afed8c1f
DS Default Resources: 642 files missing.
Genesis 8 Starter Essentials : 5198 files missing!!!
    https://gyazo.com/3da04345602480152b295db71d0a824f

Updating files took about 15 minutes and then...VICTORIA 8.1 WAS LOADED IN MY SCENE!
And it loaded pretty fast. So much faster than any other character before the update.
I mean, I'm not an expert but not a noob either. It usually gets frozen when loading and takes 5 minutes to load a character in this PC.
This time it took 10 seconds. That wasn't bad.
I zoomed in on the face and...she looked a lot like Genesis 8.
"Maybe I need to restart DAZ", I thought. So I did.

Back into DAZ I REFRESHED my Smart Content and guess what?
    https://gyazo.com/86ff796966ac7e2a886b7a3a539c895f
    NEW CONTENT!!! YAY!!!

Now I have Genesis 8.1 figures!!!
And here's a pic of Victoria 8.1 (on the left)
and Genesis 8.1 (taller, on the right) right out of the box!!!

    --------------------------------
Ok maybe this review was all too obvious for DAZ experts but it was all unexpected and
surprising to me after 2 years learning DAZ, then maybe it can help a new beginner.

Ok, I was able load the figures but now what??? Will they work on DAZ 4.11???
I will let you guys know in my next review, ok?

Haha, nice review. I had a lot of trouble with the starter essentials myself... I don't think they will work on 4.11, it's meant to work with 4.15+. BTW you can have two (and more) Daz Studios on your PC at the same time. So you can keep your 4.11 and install a new 4.15 version. Keep that in mind. Just don't replace your old files and you should be good.

I would recommend getting the newer versions simply because of the bug fixes and render optimizations they have been doing. Besides, you run the risk of downloading (& installing) a product just to find out it doesn't work with your version. Just update it. You can keep two like @ace94 said.

There are two reasons you would need 4.15:

The first is the new skin shader for Iray. If you don't use Iray, this one is pointless.

The second is the reason why your Victoria 8.1 loaded so fast. Genesis 8.1 can use all the old Genesis 8 morphs. But for some reason you need 4.15 for this to work. Otherwise you will only have 8.1 morphs. The more morphs you have, the longer it takes to load a figure, so because you can only load the V8.1 morphs, she loads super fast.

If you want to use your old morphs with 8.1 you will need to install 4.15.

However, you do not have to install a whole new version if you are scared. You can install the BETA instead. You can safely install the beta without overwriting your current Daz. You can keep one beta and one pro version at any time. There are workarounds to this, too, it is possible to have many versions of Daz on one PC. But you have to be careful. I'll spare you this as you don't sound like you would be up for that anyway.

At any rate, go try the beta. In DIM you need to check or uncheck a box that allows you to see hidden products, because the beta is hidden by default. Once that is done you can locate and download it. Install the beta and see what you have been missing these past few years. 4.11 is really old now, and while most of the updates have been for Iray, there have been other updates as well that you might like. Dforce is much improved over 4.11, and there are some quality of life improvements you may not even notice at first but are working under the hood. I recommend at least trying the beta out because you have nothing to lose doing so. You can also open save files made in either version...as long as that version has the features used in the save file. Obviously if you save a 8.1 character that has some old 8 morphs on it, this character will not load correctly in 4.11.

In the past I renamed folders to whatever version number they are and the newest daz will install into the daz folder. This is in the program files\daz folder. Also have to copy over the plugins folder.

    Thanks @Dynasty @Weebz @BamBoozler90 @Las

I was only curious about the anatomical elements working on either figure, that's all.
And it's true, with 8.1 you can now use male genitalia on female figures and viceversa.
In my case, that was all I did.
I got a female with beautiful male genitalia...silver genitalia! Then what? Where is the material? 🙂
I covered my Vicky 8.1 with a Genesis 8 skin and it looked ok
but then I had no idea what to do with the silver genitalia.
I ended up using the Futalicious as usual just like it was a G3 or G8
but then when I tried to render, the result was a failure.

And that was my experience with 8.1.

8.1 was made for hyper-realism in Iray, which my old PC will never handle.

In the future I will stick to working mostly with Genesis 3 and 3Delight materials.
If I ever use Genesis 8 then I will convert the Iray skins to 3Delight.
    Goodbye, Vicky 8.1 !!!
    Sorry, we aren't compatible 🙁

And I really hope this update did not hurt my DAZ.

    Thank you all for replying
    and let's keep in touch!

The genital textures have to be included, or you have to make them yourself. This is all new when 8.1 came out, and only a few characters have both sets. Making this more difficult is the fact that Daz does a really poor job explaining any of this, and they do not consistently list this on their own store pages.

For example, Torment 8.1 lists it quite plainly, look at the store page and the list of what is included, and you find it lists both male and female genitalia. So Torment has textures for both sets!
Victoria also has both textures, but her store page only says "03 Anatomical Elements Material Presets".

So Victoria 8.1 has the textures for you, but you cannot just slap any other skin on Victoria 8.1 and expect it to work. You need the textures. You load Victoria 8.1, apply the male gen prop, and apply the male gen texture preset. If you alter this, you need to alter them all.

8.1 only adds the OPTION to use genitals on either male or female, but it still up the seller who makes the character as to whether they include any textures to use this.

I hope that explains things a bit. As time goes on, more characters should do this. Supposedly Daz has promised that their official characters will do this going forward, but that is only them.

    Thanks for your reply @BamBoozler90

Yeah, yeah, eventually G8.1 will allow you to do this and that, hehe.
    Nah, it's not gonna happen.
G8 should have those options already.

For now, Futalicious is the only solution.

My point is that 8.1 does allow you to do this. Victoria 8.1 has this right now, I just tried it. The material preset is right there in the V8.1 materials. Torment 8.1 also does, so Torment can have a female prop on him with a matching texture.
It is only a matter of the PAs supporting it, but whether PAs support it is entirely up to them. Daz cannot force PAs to make genital textures at all, a number of PAs do not create any gen mats for their characters. This is no different. Some PAs may not want to do this, and other PAs may not have the resources to do this. You have to consider that many PAs use merchant resources as their base, but you will not find a single merchant resource that has gen mats for both sexes on a given texture. That means anybody doing this will have to create them on their own.

So far the 2 characters I listed support it. There are other 8.1 characters but they are not "officially" the same thing as Victoria. The new Cleopatra and White Priestess are not one of their own, even though they are Daz Originals. These are characters that Daz has licensed from Artstation and do not actually count as their main line. I know this is very confusing because there is nothing in their sale or store pages that address this. You have to find out from their forums.
However I have heard that Daz will support this feature with more of their main characters. So just look out for these. Every new main character always gets a thread at the Daz forums, and you can be sure somebody will bring up the topic of gen mats. If not, you can always ask yourself.
Besides, if they fail to support this feature, you can use their forum to bash them for not holding up their promise.
Maybe you can make a thread in the Daz forums that lists characters that have both male and female gen mats. That would actually be a cool idea. There are people who look for this.

If you have the templates and a little photoshop skill you can create your gen mat textures for your characters. All you have to do is match the skin at the base. There is a Renderotica product that helps you create your own textures for the official prop, I can't think of the name right now.

I also have another tip. You can copy all of the morphs you have the the official 8 gen prop into the 8.1 data folders, and give all you new 8.1 futa the exact same morphs you enjoy with the male 8 characters.
Even better, you can also use the 8.1 male gen prop on old 8 females as well. I forget exactly how, but it really easy. I think it was a simple as copying the data folders from 8.1 to 8, and you can load the male gen prop on the G8 females.

With that you can have all the tools to make futa to your heart's content. While Futalicious does the job, I personally prefer the official prop. There are a lot of morphs for the prop and Genesis tends to pose better with the official prop than others.
