    The title is pretty straightforward.
After researching a bit, and since I can indulge my gaming urges with my PS3 and PS4 units, I am seriously considering in upgrading this system as a near-exclusive rendering rig (as well as my other, dayjob related projects, that are not graphics intensive anyway).
So, Iray GPU rendering is based on cuda cores and memory capacity of the graphics cards, and will do well with a minimum of 16GB of system ram and a 4-core CPU... that part is already pretty much locked, I can get a socket 1155 xeon for relatively cheap (cheaper than an i7 for the same socket), DDR3 ram modules are sold by the bucketload, both new and used, I already have a high efficiency 600W PSU...
And, I'm balancing between three budget friendly options...
the first, and lowest in price (and overall strength, I know) is the 4GB Geforce GT 730. With 4 GB or dedicated ram, and 384 cuda cores, it should, in theory, do some work...
the second, is either the K420, or the K620 Quadro. 2 GB of RAM, 192 Cuda cores, but opted for CAD applications...
    So... thoughts, anyone?

Get a card with the largest VRAM you can get. Iray is just a pig as far as memory goes, so you'll run out of 2 Gb pretty fast (not worth it IMHO), then 4 (barely worth it but will work for simple scenes), then 6... and then 11 Gb.

The number of CUDA cores will matter, but only if you have enough VRAM for the scene.

Unfortunately, graphics card prices are just stupid right now, not the best time to get into Iray rendering I'm afraid.

Don't waste the money on a Geforce GT 730 4GB card that's only pushing 384 CUDA Cores, your render times will literately cause you physical pain, your CPU would do a better job of rendering to that end.....a GTX 760 2GB card is pushing closer to 1,150 CUDA Cores, was using one before i upgraded to the 980 Ti, it did well for small renders with manual lighting and environments.

it's a running joke with Iray....the more "CUDA" the more fun.

I agree that 384 CUDA cores is ridiculously low, but 2 GB is as much as ridiculous for Iray IMHO. Even worse if you run your monitor(s) from it. If you don't, then maybe. But that 2GB will run out quickly if you want to have 2+ models in your scenes. A 4 GB card is, again IMHO, the lowest I would go. But that's me.

I started on a 2 X GTX970 setup and it was ok. Maybe you can find one on the cheap side since these cards aren't targeted by miners...

You will need at least 6GB of VRAM if using Iray unless you like waiting hours or even days for a render to finish. A GTX 980 Ti will suffice.
Oh, nearly forgot. It's been noted recently Iray in DS has a memory leak.

Quadro is for videogame developers, you don't need more than 10-12gb to "play" with Daz.

    GeForce ftw 🙂

My scenes easily run into the 10gb range and higher sometimes. Get as much vram as you can.
