The 'easy' way would be to parent a spotlight to the end of the torch and also parent a semi-transparent cone there to act as the 'beam' if you want a visible beam.

It's unfortunate that iRay doesn't seem to have proper volumetrics so you have to fake things with geometry.

no worries, if you get stuck with it I can whip up a quick sample scene later on when I've got some spare time.

This is the basic setup and results ... I just used a DAZ cylinder and a DAZ cone primitive for the 'torch' and 'light beam'

This is the scene file, pretty basic.

Interesting... I see what they did there. That's gonna be hella processor intensive for any kind of scene.

It's basically what im doing, on a larger scale (and bothering to use SSS to fake the volumetrics). I though of doing SSS in my example but I tend to err on the side of 'good enough' when it comes to render speed.

So yeah, after a little more research most of that tutorial is out of date but the basics are still valuable.

You dont need to worry about using a sun, or setting SSS angle or any of that.

All you need to do is surround the light source inside geometry with SSS settings (you can use the ones in the tutorial). It will utterly murder your render time.
