That just motivates me to try harder. Ive tried paint, pencil, clay. Pretty much suck at those. Im fairly decent at photography and ok at PS. ATM i consider myself ok in Daz.
I just need to learn/improve my light, poses and shading. I think I can do and IMHO judging myself ive come a long way but a lot of room for improvement.
Daz lets me express myself in a way I would like to have done on canvas.
March 13, 2018 at 11:29 PM #530679Sorry for the unsolicited (and probably obvious) advise, but when working with 2D mediums such as paint, graphite, or charcoal, the thing to do is separate what you see from what you perceive. When I turn on my artist eyes, objects cease to be what they are and become shapes and shades. As in, “black is not black, black is thousands of shades of gray and even white”.
March 13, 2018 at 11:54 PM #530700If we could all be brain surgeons, pianists with golden pencils then great art and music would be common place. It sux but, Im aware of my limitations whether self imposed or genetic.
ATM Ive found Im not capable of art like this.
http://myartmagazine.com/pencil-drawingsIve watch youtube videos of sculptors, painters, dancers, singers, ect...
Ive watched swimmers, football stars, gymnasts.
Listened to geneticists, engineer's, quantum physicist.
As Popeye once said, "I am what I am." and its none of those.
Im just a normal guy with a normal job that enjoys art. 😉March 14, 2018 at 12:41 AM #530733The only joy stolen is the one that my 1st idea would have been original to the contest. I get inspiration from a plethora of things. I won't ever put my stamp on anothers idea to make it mine. I've been an artist for way too long to be doing that.
I also don't compare myself to others per se. My failure, in my eyes, doesn't come from my art. I like my art. I like the piece I entered. Its the fact that there were other pieces very similar, where as nothing entered represents my very first idea. My issue with myself is that I didn't follow my own instinct, ie; my first idea.
March 14, 2018 at 2:15 AM #530831Its difficult to be original because almost everything you do is based off of something youve experienced in the past. " There is nothing new under the Sun "
For instance if you do Noir, you are emulating a style thats been done. To truly be original you would need to create your own style. I only saw one Noir pic that set its own style and Im not sure it was even Noir.
I left a bit of color in mine but it was loosely based off a image I saw a really long time ago but, I changed a lot.
Ill try to give a few examples that might have been original or at least were in my eyes. Terminator 2 liquid Metal robot, Alien Bio Mecha, light sabers,
the Thing, Several superheros when they first came out, gunpowder, radio, Iphone, bullet time, ect...Now all of this is old school and repeated so much its common now. If you come up with a true original idea, patent that bad boy and make a few million before someone copies it and makes it better.
March 14, 2018 at 3:02 AM #530869Its a genre piece, look how many of us went to noir detective for example, that's because it's pretty much the whole genre. You can either go classic and try to do the best of classic, or you can go outside the box, like the couple of tech noir entries (which still have elements of noir but take them in other directions)
March 14, 2018 at 3:11 AM #530875A noir werewolf riding a skycycle shooting mono discs at a 4 armed assassin droid riding on a drone over an ocean of zombie sharks.
Id have probably not liked it but it would have been different.
March 14, 2018 at 6:45 AM #531025I scrapped my original idea too on account of @aftyrbyrn having done it first
(+1 to sin city influence)
scrapped a few others through not finding or being able to make what I wanted.
eventually followed some advice from a tip in a game "try using what you have instead of waiting for something better".
what I do find interesting is that we tend to forget with the story being in our minds, that what the scene shows us the creators is not necessarily what others see. which is something I need to work on, among others.March 15, 2018 at 1:33 AM #532131Sorry @Drazzilkniks, it's what popped in my head... shadows, dame, deceit, sin city... single spot light, hand made blinds. 🙂
Yeah, if i look others work before i finish mine, then I'm totally screwed and skewed. I posted mine and was like i should this, i should that, i did however want to change the angle due to some others posts @notsaying... lol. Like others, this is a hobby.
https://imgur.com/g4em7FG // alternate angle after seeing others artwork i thought of something like this, but i think it lost something
(Plus IMGUR is really effing up the color and adding fireflies after uploading... not sure what is going on there)
March 15, 2018 at 2:12 AM #532175I, as with others, went for blinds, gun, smoking, office. My first idea didn't have that. Thats what I meant by not original.
As the saying goes, every thought has already been thought by at least 3 other people. Its the one who acts on it first that gets the credit.
March 15, 2018 at 3:49 AM #532225I still think it still comes down to the 'judges' eye and feeling for the piece. If we continue to have contests like this, members should be able to vote for creative scores, but a judge, or panel of pre-selected judges should do technical scoring. Just saying. It's like at gymnastics meets, there are only three judges per event, and only those three judges are judging those events, and they never enter the event (alas the are usually old and out of shape). And are also impartial, and different at every meet. If we are doing a technical judge of each piece, then we would need a technical template to apply against it. Like the damn spirals, circles and triangles. Though some pieces in there fit them to a "T", the scores do not reflect. I don't want to be limited by a line or triangle. Ever.
I also tried to fit the stereotypical aspects of the genre to the final image, i think they may have changed my original vision. Meh, it's over now, we'll see.
March 15, 2018 at 11:25 AM #532596@drgnmztr: You can still do your idea. It just won't be in this contest. And now, I'm curious to see it. I liked your non-original render (just a little too much smoke). I found it hard to make an great homage to the film noir genre without being too stereotypical...
@littlesparrows : Great, great advice!March 15, 2018 at 2:30 PM #532826@Dragon one readon i try to post quickly.
I would hate to wait a week and then see my idea posted twice.
March 15, 2018 at 7:53 PM #533252I was going for smoke in the sunlight, since its more apparent with the sun streaks. I can see the too much smoke though, but, being an ex smoker, I've been in rooms like that. LOL
March 15, 2018 at 8:17 PM #533270reading these over i saw most people tried to go with the style, blinds and smoke for instance. I took a picture Ive been wanting to do and just tried to change the style i did it in rather than trying to stay within the boundaries.
No detective or such themes. I wish I would have been a bit more out of the bix for the pirate contest. Half are like mine and the other half are like each other. There is one I would pic for first but im going to see how it plays out.
