I've recently started using Blender, Marvellous Designer and ZBrush, learning to make my own models and clothing; just wondering if anyone else here makes their own stuff and what programs you use. I'm looking into using Substance Painter for materials when I finally gain mastery of modelling.
I started doing this mainly because there are not enough props and accessories in my preferred genre at Daz, Rendo and the more reasonable sites. There is plenty that I like on Turbosquid, but the prices are astronomical. So, I'm teaching myself. If anyone can point me in the directions of some good beginners ZBrush tutorials too, I'd really appreciate that.
February 14, 2022 at 12:51 PM #1776428I make my own clothes(league of legends stuffs) and I use blender only.
Characters sculpting and morphs though, that's abit beyond my ability, for now. But if I ever come around and start making them, blender and Zbrush is way to go.February 14, 2022 at 1:27 PM #1776441So far I've made a doughnut, a goblet and a crown in Blender and I've started a dress in Marvellous Designer and am attempting jewellery in ZBrush, but I'm still not entirely happy with how they look. lol
I think perserverance and taking constructive criticism and advice from the pros is the key to advancement. It worked for me with Photoshop. I actually started off in GIMP as someone who hadn't the first clue of how to do anything and ended up - thanks to advice and criticism - as someone who had learnt enough to make their own tutorials and brushes to help beginners. I went from not thinking I had any ability, to being able to photobash, digitally draw and paint and actually make money from my work; although it did take almost two years. I'm now getting serious about 3D art in the same manner. I used to use Daz and Poser just to render items and characters that I could post as stock on Deviantart, I'm now taking it seriously as an art medium and hoping to learn all I can.
February 14, 2022 at 2:11 PM #1776453@ethiopia That's gorgeous. It reminds me somewhat of Princess Diana's wedding dress or Fergie's, even - I love the big flowing OTT stuff of the eighties.
I have a bugbear/pet peeve, insofar as that I hate historically inaccurate things; whether it's films, TV, shows, or 3D models or art. I blame popular culture and its obsession with modernising the past to fit the present - especially where historical dramas are concerned. And, in turn such inaccuracy leads some artists, who have neither inclination or desire to properly reseach history, to create inaccurate art based upon the dramas which they've watched, as opposed to the proper research which should have been done.
Fantasy and sci-fi is fine - you can plumb the depths of your imagination to create fantasy or sci-fi art and pieces; that's perfectly okay, but when people begin to confuse fantasy art with historical art, therein - as far as I'm concerned, lies the problem - the drama series, The Tudors was a prime example of this, for very little in that series, from costumes to the appearance of characters (who were real people and existed in the past) to the narrative itself, was accurate. The costuming was atrocious; a mish mash of different historical periods, influenced heavily by fantasy, as opposed to genuine historical record, I fear, led a lot of people who could not be bothered to read a history book, but will happily watch a TV show, create art and label it ''historical'' based on this.
The same goes for steampunk - it's a science fiction genre, influenced by Victorian fashions, yet more than often gets labelled as ''historical'' in Daz and Rendo.
Sorry about the rant - but historical accuracy is something I'm passionate about! lol
February 14, 2022 at 3:51 PM #1776498@ethiopia I'm nodding all the way in agreement with you; my mum has this beautiful peach coloured silk two piece which she wore in the eighties/early nineties (before I was born, or when I was a wee baby) in the back of her wardrobe which I absolutely adore, as it's peach silk with subtle paisley design, has those eighties/early nineties shoulder pads and the pleated, flowing skirt. And a neck cameo brooch; which is completely gorgeous.
February 15, 2022 at 8:32 AM #1776697I don't make content using outside programs but I do make simple things I need from prims. I used to build in prims way back in the day when I would work on maps for Quake 3 and a mod called Urban Terror as well as build houses in prims on Second Life. I mean I wouldn't go so far as to build a complete structure out of primitives these days but If I need something simple I can do with planes, cubes, spheres, etc I will whip it together for use.
