Dirty Hair

So I was asked a question today about making hair look dirty. I tried using a dirt decal and it looked iffy, depending on the angle . My Next try I created a geoshell but probably need to figure out how to texture it because applying a shader didnt seem to work. Only way I can figure to do it is overlay dirt on the hair texture and create a edited bump map.

Provide more details regarding what your expectations are for 'dirty' hair. Greasiness? Literal dry dirt particles? Dandruff flakes? All of the above? I mean, are we imagining: "I didn't wash my hair yesterday." or "I slept in a pile of dry leaves and manure for a week."

My initial thought is that 'dirty' hair is largely a contrast to 'clean' hair. And 'clean' hair tends toward fluffy, groomed, and shiny. I imagine you'll want to evoke the appearance of the opposite; limp, grungy, messy.

Also, where 'clean' hair has a glossy shine, 'dirty' hair has more of a greasy shine evidenced by clumpiness, hair tresses actually sticking together.

Me personally I'd want anything from desert dust to caked wet/dry mud. Oil might be pulled off with wet hair and maybe change the way light reacts with it but honestly Id say all the above besides dandruff. Id like to be able to take most existing hair and edit it to the scene. I believe the original asker had basic dirt in mind
