Well, how about that. She's finally here: https://www.renderosity.com/marketplace/products/163669/dawn-2

First impression? She looks pretty good, a lot less ugly compared to Dawn 1 and it appears the majority of issues had with D1 have been corrected.

Personally speaking, I didn't think Dawn was a bad character per se, but she had a lot of limited options on the Daz side of things due to user/creator demographics being more skewed towards Poser at the time the original dropped. Now that Daz Studio and Blender have largely diminished Poser to being a footnote to casual users, I wonder if we'll see more support for D2 for Daz.

It's also telling that D2 has come at a time where reception to Genesis 9 has been... mixed. Without getting into an entirely different subject, the "Unimorph" character is a good idea in theory and writing, but the execution is not great at all. IMHO, the preference will always be for split gendered figures (and females will always be more popular because 3D porn and shovelware WEGs on Steam), so maybe D2 will tap into a frustrated market that doesn't like G9.

Or maybe I'm overthinking it. That's possible, too.

tl;dr: I like Dawn 2 from first impressions and she's an overall improvement from the first. If they can make Dusk 2 not look horrifically ugly as well (and Baby Luna for that matter), then I hope HW3D can make a comeback outside of their animal figures. And hopefully give Daz a little bit of competition that they can't easily squash out like they did back in the day.

ETA: Also hoping Diffeomorphic guy will hopefully consider adding Dawn 2 for compatibility purposes: I don't use DS anymore aside from morphing and setting up a figure but beyond that (provided DS doesn't crash every few minutes as it does on Mac), I do everything in Blender now. It's so much better lmao.

Jesus wept, that's one hell on an ugly model. If the promo images are supposed to show her the very best she can be there's no hope. The morphs of her is slightly better, but come on.

Never used the original Dawn model. Might look at this model at some stage in the future. Happy with Genesis 8 models right at the moment.

I think it will prove crucial to uptake that she will be able to wear G8 & G9 clothing.

When that question was asked, it was glossed over, so I suspect not. :0/

That makes me want to use AI.

Not even close to G8 based on the images but im on my phone so... they look blown out with too much light

That is an absolutely horrid looking character. I've rarely seen such anatomically bad work in a figure design, and the promo images look like they were done by an amateur. Even if it's supposed to be considered a "caricature" the rigging and deformation is terrible. That would have looked outdated and laughable ten years ago.

That does not bode well for the future of Poser if that's considered top tier. Who is actually paying for that kind of garbage?

Don't forget...Poser is a religion, not a software company. There are a few hysterically loyal fans who will sing it's praises loudly.

    Same here.
That waste of polygons is the same complete Shitshow that it already was 11yrs ago.
Piss-poor rigging, not a hint of anatomically correct edgeloop layout, awful default shape, and then they wonder why there is zero support from capeable 3D artists.

I have more realistic looking and bending characters based on Poser 4's Dork and Posette.
(Same is of course true for "LaFemme". Gosh, I even hate that pretentious name. Lol)

What never ceases to amaze me is that loud minority of Rendo forum dwellers who "welcome" even the most pathetic Poser meshes and are eager to shout down even the slightest criticism.
    It's forced "positive" group-think at it's best...
You HAVE to be "Happy & helpful", or else...

It's such a shame, because Poser actually IS capeable of much higher quality, but it really needs a figure that is tailored to it's strenghts and weaknesses, like Genesis is especially designed to work with Studio.

But it isn't just the figures...
Poser 13 is also a complete dumpster-fire, with their beloved SUPAHFLY not even remotely living up to it's "fame".

Meh, let them have their 5min of exitement until they go back to whining about DAZ "stabbed them in their back by stopping Poser support".
I think they actually enjoy being at the bottom of the 3D world.

    Yes, I was underwhelmed too.

I don't think I would bother for free, TBH.

The textures actually don't look too bad, not too good either, but the face and body shapes are awful.

Personal opinion? It's too little, too late.

    Too Little:

    • It appears about as advanced as Victoria 3 with maybe a few joint and topology fixes. The topology is likely not as amenable to morphing as the latest/greatest DAZ figures are. Don't get me wrong, I think Chris Creek was an awesome mesh-maker, but this figure looks like it came out of a time capsule.
    • It's not enough to introduce a figure with some basic clothes, hair, textures, and then expect the world to drop everything and make stuff for it. Hate on DAZ (okay, Tafi) all you want, but to their credit and when they need to? They do have a knack for corralling PAs and various other resources, into launching a new figure with a large variety of stuff all ready to go with it. Dawn/Renderosity didn't really do that, at least not on the same scale.
    • Love it or hate it, the fact is that there are two potential sources of making a figure successful: the Cute crowd (Star, Cookie, Sadie/Sam, etc) or the Porn crowd (nearly everything else). They apparently courted neither, and neither will likely touch it (except maybe as some random vendor's personal challenge.) They should've courted the Renderotica crowd to make the pervy bits and products for it, IMO.

    Too Late:

    • Poser as a platform limits what can be done with any figure you use in it. Yeah, it can allegedly (with enough hammering) adapt any clothing to any figure, and you can allegedly import whatever figure into it with enough swearing, sweat, tears, and external helper tools, but the rendered results in general aren't any better than what you could get 20 years ago
    • Poser's UI and feature list suffers from 15-20+ years of neglect and general lack of innovation. No way you're going to get impressive results without bringing massive postwork efforts to bear on it.

Poser isn't dead, but it is in hospice. Aside from the dwindling cadre of religious fanatics pretending that it's the greatest thing since sex was discovered, nobody else is going to give a damn about it. Poser was awesome for its time, but that time ended 15-20 years ago.
