Cliffhangers for Vue, a new and innovative approach to cliffs and rockfacing.
Utilizing both Vue’s procedural and image mapping capabilities, Cliffhangers provides another layer of realism for your Vue scenes, whether for distance, mid-ground or up close. The goal here was not so much ‘photo’ realism as it was ‘geo’ realism.
The Cliffhanger Metanode
At the heart of the kit lies the Cliffhanger metanode. This is an open node with 4 other metanodes inside of it. It is open so you can dissect and tweak to your discretion. The node has 4 sliders for 4 characteristics found to one degree or another in all cliff and rock faces. These are Cracks, Strata, Vertical Joint, and Grain. The default for the node I have set at 1,4,6,1 with the emphasis on strata and joint. But change it as you see fit. The default for most of the mats I have set at 0,6,8,0. Again, change them as you wish.
The Objects
This kit has 12 objects…6 cliff objects and 6 boulders. The 6 cliff objects are fully textured with ecosystems and are ready to render. They come in big at about 300 or more feet tall. The boulders have a simple rock mat applied.
The Templates
In the form of both materials and functions, another basic feature of this kit are what I call the Templates. These are black and white distributions based on cavity and ambient occlusion. Each template mat and function are specific to a particular object and all are labeled. You cannot use the High Pass template on The Outlook object for instance. Each object has it’s own. With these templates one is able to gain an extra layer of shading that gives an extra dimensionality to the cliff objects. The boulder templates are a mix of light and dark. The cliff object templates are a mix of light and dark with an added mix for a topping. With these distributions you can put rough dark rock in the cracks and crevasses and smoother, lighter rock on the outside or any number of other combinations.
The Procedurals
These materials have just procedural bump utilizing the metanode. There are no images involved.
The Mixers
Two simple mixers…a dark and light and a dark and light with a topping.
