So this is one reason portraits and bland backrounds dont impress me much here.

There are a few that tweek the skin and enhance realism or paint extra hair ect... but overall just posting a picture of a rendered woman is just 'OK"

To create this I clicked on a G8 figure
I Clicked on a lighting template
    I clicked on an outfit
    I clicked on a hair
I clicked on a pose and expression
I tilted the head up slightly
Rendered it and touched a few spots up in PS.

Thats It. I did almost nothing but click a few times and hit render.

If I were to do a bit more posing add some interesting backround and maybe some action then it would develop personality ( character ). Just slapping a model in front of a camera doesnt do much unless youve altered the subject in some way as to set it apart from the average ho-hum render. Texture quality or custom lighting, shading can do this.

It will however show you somewhat of what your system is capable of when not pushed to heavy. This was rendered at 3000 width with most settings doubled on my laptop then resized.

And there you have it. Probably about 70% of renders submitted to online galleries.

    Looks good though.

I agree with everything you say. There isn't really much point to most of the "portrait" renders I see shared about unless you're showing off a custom model, a custom skin or just using it as a test to get the settings you want.

I'll go further though and say that most peoples idea of art extends to what they see on social media though and not much further. A pretty image is all they require of "art" and although I believe art is whatever the viewer interprets as art, it shows a lack of depth to those people churning out these kind of renders.

I mean it's not like those steps are harder for any other render.

    Just a few additional steps.

    Click Environment to load.
Click HDRI or place ghost lights.
    Translate Character into position.

agree partially. a portrait is the least amount of effort.

I did my Mixed entry in 2 days. I did my portrait in 30 minutes not including render time.

I tend to disagree, portraits can be very difficult to get right. Most "out of the box" poses need a fair bit of work, especially hands and expressions, also with a portrait you only have one point of focus as opposed to a scene that has several elements for the eye to wander over, so with a portrait the render is really going to come under scrutiny.

Having said that opinions are pointless anyway, you should produce works that appeal to your own artistic inclinations, if others like them that's just a bonus.

I've been a keen photographer for as long as I can remember, Landscapes? cracked it, Wildlife? cracked it, Portraits.....never really happy with my work as I always considered it was the model who struck the pose/expression and all I did was press the shutter release, I have to be honest though I'm still chasing that elusive DAZ Masterpiece, Portraiture is much harder than you think.

Take a 1000 pics and your lucky to get one thats truly great.

mountians dont move quickly, wildlife is difficult but get close or get a long lens. People are probably the hardest since we see people a lot and are more critical. However in 3d youre working with a model that does exactly what you want. Doesnt move or blink. It looses attitude and thats a problem. But im also not talking about an artists that spends 4 days morphing wrinkles in a smile or texturing pores in skin. Im refering to most of the generic renders that people want input on.

    @zombivor

    For sure.

“Portrait” is not synonymous with “plop and drop” by any means. If y’all could see the workflow that goes into a render from our resident porrrait queen, Miarka, it would make your head swim.

best photos from my experience and research sunrise, sun set and just about anytime on an overcast day.

Might not be perfect but PS csn add clouds to most any blank sky.

Unfortunately, I have little time to enjoy photography atm and few places near me I care to photograph. An occasional frog or praying mantis in the yard or when I go on vacation.

A suject must be intetesting to me and the more I see the less interests me. Same for renders. The competitions here are keeping things fresh atm. Seeing the flood of portrait renders online starting from V3 ive been desensitized. Some realistic renders still turn my eye but most do nothing for me.

If you have some portraits that are amazing, I would love to renew my passion for beautiful and well done Daz portraits.
ATM the last good one I saw was a bust entered into a contest here. Even then, a quick google search will turn up ridiculously great renders. So im sorry if I come across badly but, I dont consider myself anywhere near that level and I judge others based off my opinion. Other opinions will vary.

Portraits that are amazing? that's a laugh. I'm still at the mundane level while trying to get to grips with DAZ, recently upgraded to a 6gig graphics card (from 1.5) so at least the renders aren't taking as long, When I get to the stage where I'm happy myself you may see some.

Main reason I'm having a go with DAZ is my photography portraits were taken mainly at events, trying to isolate subjects with so much going on is very difficult so don't be surprised to find my DAZ stuff will very likely have plain backgrounds.

Oddly enough I cut my teeth on Slide Film so my attitude to digital photography is get it right in camera with minimum fuss in photoshop, 90% of my images are crop, levels and sharpen, and maybe cloning out dust bunnies if my sensor needed cleaning, so messing about with so many sliders etc, in DAZ is quite a change.

Could never do film. Way to much to remember. Lose a ton of cash and time because of one miscalculation. I do a few test settings in camera then shoot RAW. Its lazy but it works for me.
