Hello there,
Is anyone else having problems with Mega, starting something like 1-2 months ago? The thing suddenly got almost unusable to me. Some months ago it was great, staying at top speed of about 1.5mb/s but now it's extremely unstable, keeping at some hundreds of kb/s for some seconds and then stopping to a crawl for a long while. Mega support was pretty useless, only suggesting the obvious.
I just want to know to which extent this is only on my end. The bandwidth is fine everywhere else... but perhaps I can get some clues?
Sometimes I use the Megasync downloader/uploader sometimes not, but I have seen no changes like you are talking about. I do pay about $12 / month for a plan that gives me -

2 TB base quota + 40 GBA dialog started to pop up during downlaods from Mega about 1 or 2 months ago. The dialog says something like "Do you want Mega to be able to store files on your device?" I can't remember the exact words, but that's the gist of it - I get the impression that Mega is trying to use users' hard drives as a kind of distributed storage. While the popup is displayed, downloading stops. It starts again as soon as I hit the Block button on the dialog. When the dialog is not displayed, downloading is as fast as ever. The dialog appears every third or fourth download (I think, I haven't actually counted).
OK, a long-winded intro. MY guess is that you are not seeing the dialog becuase you have a popup blocker supressing it. Thus, your downloads grind to a halt and there's nothing visible to you to tell you that Mega is waiting for your input. I do have popup blockers in my browser, but if you and I have a different combination of blockers, or are using a different browser, we coudl easily get different behaviours.
I certainly don't promise that this is the answer, there might be something else going wrong for you as well, but this certainly aflicts me

^That's their ad for it. Basically, let's say I have a Daz hair I just bot called AndyMc Hair. I want to share it, so I put it into the folder on my PC labeled F:Mega/Hair. I turn on MEGAsync downloader and it automatically uploads AndyMc Hair into the appropriate virtual "Hair" file at MEGA.Nz
I like it because I can queue many things to upload overnight and I like having a 'Zonegfx' file on my PC containing all the items I have uploaded / shared. I have an 8? TB external HD I store Daz related items on, so I don't care that there is a duplication on a PC HD and Virtual at MEGA.Nz.
The MEGAasync Downloader comes with a basic Transfer Manager, showing your 'Active Transfers', 'Uploads' and 'Downloads'. It allows you to put some things in the queue on hold and also move something to the top or bottom you may or may not want sooner.
Sorry if this is more info than you ever want, but I find it to be a good tool I appreciate using.
Yep, that's what that "popup" is for. It helps reading, and understanding what it says, before one goes ballistic.
Mega IS unstable - however, the Mega Sync client is usually faster than pure web, and a recommended install.
Another solution is using something like jDownloader, and just set it up to register when you click on Mega-links. That way you get the benefit of jDownloader (multiple parallell connections and such, for instance) - usually I max out my line via jDownloader for at least 90% of the stuff I download (typically I get a bandwidth regulation from time to time, so 1 or 2 might fall down to 50-100 kbps for a bit).
Also remember that Mega throttles your connection - if you download a lot of stuff, they will temporarily set a bandwidth limiter on you.

The problem though is that the problem isn't restricted to the browser. It's the same on MegaSync, and the same even on JDownloader. Always the same pattern: a couple seconds on decent speed, then drops to an agonizingly slow speed, then rises to something between 100 and 500kbps for a couple of seconds and then drops again.
In the weeks before this, Kaspersky Internet Security was throwing some warnings about Mega.nz browser connections (not necessarily bad, but needed my permission). I recently disabled Kaspersky protection for testing download speeds but got no difference.
Perhaps I will route my connection through my cellphone (4G) to see if it's an ISP or IP thing. If someone got any other ideas please let me know 🙂
It may just be a dodgy IP and a fresh one could help you out. Or are you using a VPN? Have you got a dynamic or fixed IP? If it's dynamic, just turn off the power to your box/router for about a minute so it resets and then reconnect. If you have a static IP address you'll have to contact your ISP to change it, which can be a pain.
If the speed is consistently crap across the board, that's a different thing. If so, it might be, as EvilMonkey said, an IP which has gotten a limiter on it, or just that your ISP is throttling MEGA connections. It will of course also depend on where in the world you are, and what connection you do have (you said something about having a top speed of 1.5Mbps, which isn't much to begin with) - if it's DSL, it's very susceptive to interference and depending on your ISP, they might throttle you bandwidth for a multitude of reasons.
Without knowing more, it's impossible to help, but if this is strictly a MEGA issue, the first step would of course be to try to change IPs, then perhaps try via a VPN just to see if there is any changes to the speed (you will lose a bit over VPN, but if it's your ISP throttling, it should be evident).
What the fuck. For some silly reason I didn't think of testing this issue with my Linux notebook. I just tested it and it's not only stable but also really fast (for my standards), doing about 3mb/s.
Kaspersky is my firewall...I can't think of anything else that may be causing this, aside from some obscure Windows stuff... I'll mess around and see what I can find.

Get a VPN is my advice and lock Windows down with an app like O&O shutup10
Also get KIS instead of just the firewall.Your ISP may throttle you if you're a MEGA or Torrent user.
And they won't tell you that you are being throttled either.Yep, I didn't mention it but I do use KIS. It does the firewall duties on my machine.
The thing is, when my notebook downloads at top speed without any kind of problems using the same public IP of my desktop, it rules out throttling issues. I'm trying to troubleshoot this at the Kaspersky forum, but if someone got any other ideas, please let me know 🙂
Found it... fucking hell. It was Killer Ethernet screwing me over, again. Last time it was a memory leak.
It turns out that this network driver has the "advanced" feature of "stream detection", so you can prioritize your traffic according to your needs. Turns out the thing was the culprit, disabling the feature solved the problem, so there you go.
Be careful with this shoddy driver.
Killer Ethernet has had... quite a few mishaps over time. I don't really think I'll ever go for a board with that on it 😀
