I was originally sitting down to do "Legend" which i came up with my legend, just couldn't come up with a scene, so i made a surfer chick instead...

So, i think i have finally created a real sun light ... lemme know what you think. The sun is a really big emissive sphere with values cranked way up, far far away from the subject. Wanted that golden hair and edge highlights you only get around sun rise/sun set.

    Temp 4000k
    Luminescence: 1000000.0 kcd/m^2

    Titled: Waiting for waves.

First is one with no back lighting, no scene lighting, just the sun. Which is best representation of a morning on the beach? And if none are, what would you do different?

Second added some back lighting, but don't like the shadows.

Third, turned scene default light back on with Environment set at .15, washes out the back shadows and still leaves the highlights, but maybe still too bright?

lol, ignore her broken thumb... she got it snagged in some coral yesterday. I'll splint it later. And no, the beach, ocean and trees aren't yet. Though that'll be my next challange, and to keep it looking similar.

are the sky ocean and trees a flat background, dome or skybox ?
if its a spherical coord image then there a re a few things you could do
to it in PS to make it into a fake hdri and load it as your environment.
otherwise yea the sun works pretty well. You might want to fiddle with tone mapping if you want to try lighten the first image up a bit, or take the third image but get a nighttime hdri for the environment image so that the fill light on the back is more cold and the sunrise gives the warm glow.

Sky is flat. wanted to get the lighting right first, then add trees and ocean and sky after... would have added some time to each render, right now i'm at 3 minutes a render. The rest will probably bring it up to around 10-15.

Tone mapping 😉 i'll try that, haven't moved that dial yet.

    Thanks!

Shit. If those were 3d trees, waves, sky, i should get a gold star 🙂

The first one is the most accurate I think, doesn't matter the time of day, if the sun is right in front of you silhouetting happens.

that said, i prefer the second one, except there isn't enough shadow on the board (as you mention).

maybe put an invisible area light in the direction of the camera for some soft shadow / fake GI

the second one fits best, IMHO, for "facing the sun" scenes, but it may need some color tweaking in photoshop. No matter how breathtakingly orange the sky may be on sunset, we still receive a cold hue light on the near surrounding. As it is now, all 3 renders are dominated by warm colors, this belongs more to a flame-lit scene than a sunset. Add some cold hue correction in post-work, and you'll be fine

I do prefer the second one even if the lighting is more accurate in the first one like silverboaX said. Now, get back working on your Legend entry!!

😀 Yes @Miarka, i gots 10 days 🙂 I'm stumped on what to do with my idea. It'll do it's frued thing

I wanted to try a diffuse light or something, or atom cam, but haven't figured that out yet. I tried a reflective gold surface behind, but didn't like it either, but true true it's too warm looking, but then again, i did put a super mini sun behind her, i'll cool it down.

one more test... diff scene... emmisive light bulbs... very realistic looking, didn't fully render cuz i was only messing around.

Getting there... now everything is an object (except the sky).

Ahh... they look so much better, except the conversion separates the leaves from the branch... I really want to do it w/o PS ... native in Daz. but that may be reaching :/

Right Click, View images or save them or whatever, the small scale does it no justice
Look at the last two in full res... you can see the first one before palm trees are converted to subD objects and second is after. Palm on left has smoothing mod as well, right two don't. They look stunning, except for the detachment :/

Only non-3D object in there is the backdrop sky. Water, Beach, Trees are now 3d. The first post only the girl and the board were 3d. Totally stoked with this tangent of a project...

@Aftyrbyrn Turned out fantastic. Had you not mentioned the detachments, I probably wouldn't have even noticed it right away, at least until I compared the two side by side. Great work.
