I have been impatiently waiting for a G9 to G8F Character Converter script pretty much right from the launch of G9. So far as I can see there hasn't been much progress with it, largely down to Daz nixxing the process. I would be very happy with just a head morph conversion, but even that is not a smooth path.
Thinking laterally then, I'm wanting to end up with a G8.1F head morph duf.
What is the current opinion of the state of play with the old Face Gen / Face Transfer / Head Shop type of approach?
I appreciate there is probably newer better AI software that will do the job quicker & better, but would they be able to pop out a G8.1F head morph for me?
Basically I am thinking of working from a G9 promo portrait.
All constructive input appreciated!

I'm not being ignorant about the question (hopefully), but want to know why you'd want a Gee-nine character on a Gee-ate frame. Are there characters for G9 that are nicer/cuter/sexier/prettier than any of G8's pile of characters?I wrestle with that every time a new figure comes out. Do I really want to buy new clothes...all over again? This is why I still use Vicky Fourpointtwoplusplus a lot. I skipped G1 and 3 (I think most of us did) and have some G8 but only for the clothes that would be too much trouble to convert to Vicky Fore.
I also don't get wrapped up in characters. I have maybe 20 for Vicky Four and much less for G8. So many look the same and it takes something pretty special to get me to buy another one.February 1, 2026 at 8:53 PM #2162009It is just the compulsive OCD collector in me.
At first there were very, very few G9 characters that grabbed me.
These days there are quite a few, but I am not about to install G9 bloat in my already crowded Library.
It turns out that most vendors do little, if anything, with the body, so that means the pretty face ( in the eye of the beholder 😉 ) is all I feel I want to have ported over to a base character I really like.🙂
February 1, 2026 at 9:47 PM #2162014EDIT: I may have misunderstood whether you want a G9 head morph on G8.1F, or a G8.1F morph on G9.
Have you tried MF's 'Figure Converter for G9'? It essentially conforms the G8F/1 mesh to the G9 mesh to produce a morph. Your options included head, or, body, or both combined. It works pretty well, but you do end up with the eyeball issue (a big gap between the eyeball and socket). G9 is also shorter than G8 and can result in screwy morphs.
As for Face Transfer 2, it's really just a matter having a 'perfect' face render of your character (ie, effective lighting and angle). It produces a face morph and texture for G9.
On a side note, I suspect that many of the G9 'celebrity' lookalikes are due to Face Transfer 2 using promotional celebrity photography (and probably some morph clean up in Blender and texture clean up in Photoshop)...and/or AI generated portraiture of a celebrity (again, for effective lighting and angle). After all, they don't need to look exact, just close enough to be recognizable.

From G9 to G8F 🙂
February 2, 2026 at 3:09 PM #2162125Why?
Because it's there!
In all seriousness though, I have a few G8 characters that I converted down to G3 and even G2 - not because I think the G(earlier) characters are superior (they're not really), but because I can pack more into a scene w/o overloading the render engine; I use the G3/G2/G1 versions as background characters when they're not part of the foreground.
IMO, the hardest part of converting to or from G9 is those stupid eyeballs. I get that there are reasons why they're separate, but holy crap it's a PITA when you try to do anything toon-like w/o using the redneck-engineered Anime Filatoon eye/pupil thing. I just had to content myself with sticking to G8 for toons, and that's that. (grr...)
February 2, 2026 at 7:07 PM #2162172There are all sorts of issues with G9, so I have totally lost patience with it.

February 3, 2026 at 6:17 PM #2162338@pooper Have you tried using Decimator for reducing the polys on G8 to use it/them as lower poly background characters? It might reduce your workflow...and your runtime.
February 3, 2026 at 9:20 PM #2162348Thought about it, but decided against it. In my case, it was actually easier to set a figure once and re-use as needed - only takes 3 minutes for each one since I have the workflow down cold. I have a 4070 w/12GB, so it's not like I'm hurting for resources, but it's more fun to get the render done faster.
February 4, 2026 at 12:41 AM #2162360I find annoying that there is no RSSY converter for Genesis 9 hair to Genesis 8. Thankfully there is a lot of Genesis 8 hair that I can use.
February 4, 2026 at 11:11 AM #2162436Richard's G9 clone works pretty well.
Does anyone have any input on the original question?

No one any relevant input?

February 7, 2026 at 3:12 PM #2162912There's been a couple of polls over at Renderhub and it looks like G8 is still the preferred figure. There was lots of discussion and from a limited input AND what I see in Daz's own forums, a majority of people who are buying G9 are somewhat new to Daz and 3D. They wouldn't have anything invested in G8 so there's no reason to want a converter. And of course Daz will kill any mention of a converter since it's in their interest to force everyone into G9 in order to make people buy the same content all over again.
February 7, 2026 at 3:41 PM #2162914That is exactly the situation & why I was asking the question.

Oh dear, a shared flaw I think. 🙂
Sorry, no clues on where to find a convertor that actually works pretty well. -
