Yes, same thing happens with movies, videogames and all other kinds of digital resources; sites like this are essential for preservation because due to short-term profit searching or deranged licensing contracts we can't trust any results-driven entity to keep things in the long term. We must be thankful to all these random people all over the world and, to the extent of our capabilities, contribute to their effort.

We used to share large torrents or zips of older stuff around this time as Christmas presents.
