Or are there a lot of poorly executed morphs coming out lately that just look... Well, wrong. I'm talking about head/face character morphs, but there's been some dodgy complete characters.
I agree that there ought to be a supply of, for want of a better term, ordinary characters but...
I'm old, forgive me 🙄
April 14, 2024 at 11:27 PM #2070361Being 'experienced'(not old) gives us a more discerning eye, a sense of proportion and a long memory.
I agree that there's a lot of poorly done characters that mostly look the same. I have only about a dozen characters that I use, from Vicky Fourpointtwoplusplus to G8. It takes something unique and well done to spur my interest anymore.April 15, 2024 at 12:24 AM #2070364TBH I think the quality generally has noticeably dropped since G9 launch. :0/
April 15, 2024 at 1:24 AM #2070368I just noticed that new post, 'Mikeala' morph for G9. It struck me how much that pose makes her look just like Vicky Three.
April 15, 2024 at 1:34 AM #2070369I haven't noticed a recent decline but I've been out of the loop for 12 months. As @Ethiopia says they mostly look all the same to me. Maybe I'm just very jaded with the look of Daz/Poser people.
April 15, 2024 at 1:53 AM #2070370I was updating my asset database this week-end and, looking at the 4.000 references that were missing from my list, that was exactly my thoughts : feminine or masculine, the difference was sometimes not immediately discernible and the vast majority was in fact kinda... ugly.
Sigh...
April 15, 2024 at 3:41 AM #2070377Personal I think it has been an issue for awhile.
There are popular vendors that you can stack character over each other and tell little difference. Textures that they might move a mole or add freckles. Bodies that add boob size reduce waist and nothing else.
I still fish for morphs but am mostly after skin textures now. I'm due for another reset wipe but have been to side tracked to commit.
Some G9 women have the he-she vibe and need feminine aspects dialed in. G8 still seems to render better for some reason or maybe it's me convincing myself it does.
It does seem morph only characters are more common with head focus and little/no detail to the body. Some morphs look ridiculous but that's just my taste.
That said there are still some really nice characters being put out. Unfortunately it more quantity than quality.
April 15, 2024 at 9:13 AM #2070400No, it is not just you @d0gg0d
For my purposes, single frame full body renders, G8 is far superior to G9.
April 15, 2024 at 11:10 AM #2070412I'd agree that G9 stepping back into the dual sex model has made me somewhat leery about it. I've found that many of the male characters have a female "feel" to them because of this.
April 15, 2024 at 4:53 PM #2070443You all are not alone.
Long ago, I would get any character that looked even remotely interesting. Now, it's very rare.
I think the difference, for me, lies in the fact that I can make my own characters, and that unless the texture really stands out, or the face does, or it's an overall character that's really out there (aliens or well-done toon shapes, etc), I won't bother. If there's some shape or size I want, a well-stocked group of morphs will let me do the job quite nicely without the need for packing more MB into an already overloaded directory structure. It has become the same way with poses as well, since I've converted 99% of everything I have to everything else I have (and automation scripts make it even easier!) In the vast majority of cases, I can get something close enough to what I want and tweak it from there.
I'm starting to get that way with clothes as well, because thanks to autofit and easy conversion processes, much of what comes out today is just a rehash of what was already made, and while dForce items have pretty promo images, the process of making it work is clunky and yucky IMO.
I'm not totally jaded, though. Iray shader kits for example I'll frequently give a second look to, because those will allow me to modify existing meshes in a scene (clothes, walls, whatever) to look like something else. I'll also always look at and get good utilities, scenes, HDRI sets, and other things that more often than not unique and useful.
