There is a Millennium Falcon interior out there but it's a 3ds file. I've converted it to both OBJ and FBX, neither of which retain the materials so does anybody know how it can be done, or have an interior at all?
Thankee kindly!!
November 22, 2022 at 12:20 AM #1893006Did you convert from blender? I've had a lot of luck COLLADA - DAE but you might have to mess with the export settings.
I would take a look but I have an animation rendering and it's going to take A LONG TIME..
Though I don't even know what program you are trying to open this in..
November 22, 2022 at 6:13 AM #1893049you want to import it in DAZ, right ? 3ds files are pretty basic in terms of materials anyway, so best you can get are the maps with very basic material settings. but if you want i give it a shot, i work with 3Ds Max most of the time ...
November 22, 2022 at 6:20 AM #1893050Ha ha, @ethiopia I was on the dark side.
Jokes aside, I've barely touched the 3ds format. As far as I remember, I think Poser opened that type of file, so creating a pz3 or pz2, I think D|S can "swallow" the object correctly...
Even the Autodesk FBX converter 2013.
I do not recommend Blender, because if we want to go back to DAZ, we will have the typical compatibility problems.November 22, 2022 at 6:34 AM #1893052@Kefka "I’ve had a lot of luck COLLADA – DAE"
Yep it's now my go-to format for conversion. FBX tends to explode all over the place when imported to DS and .obj often comes in without separate parts.November 22, 2022 at 8:31 AM #1893079@Frank22 Yeah, that's been my main issue with .obj and FBX as well. There are some wonderful models out there that are rare enough in their content to warrant a bit of work getting them into DS, but it depends how much head banging you can take. Sadly with my M.E., that tends to be minimal!!
@stachelzelle that would be cool if you could take a look. As I said, the 3ds is complete with basic textures, I just can't do anything beyond the basic conversion to .obj/FBX (ie, no textures)To all, thanks for your input. It's always appreciated by a bear with little brains!
November 22, 2022 at 9:11 AM #1893097@Biff ... well then send me a link to the file and i take a look at it 😉
November 22, 2022 at 2:24 PM #1893247@Frank22 & @Biff , the Collada format, he is abandoned in "a drawer in the attic", thanks to Autodesk, for wanting to get rid of the FBX license, original from Japan. It is not a panacea, although, on some occasions, it can be successful.
The BIG problem lies in the construction of any format based on meshes: They are never exact.
I myself work with CAD/CAM, and I know that "that coordinate is that", because the CAD formats (IGS, Step, or Solidworks...) are precise up to thousandths of a millimeter. They are "vectorial", not "bitmaps"...November 22, 2022 at 3:42 PM #1893277Sorry, but I "discovered" that Rhinoceros can also open .3ds formats.
From my experience with the .3ds I used decades ago, they were low poly. Perhaps, by increasing polygons, it will be more coherent with its original topology, but we must take into account how the textures are applied to its planes... (Thing from grimoire books, like a Lovecraftnian "Necronomicon"..)November 22, 2022 at 8:50 PM #1893361@abad Thanks for looking. Sadly, that was all there was. Never mind, I'll keep searching, but again, thanks for taking a look 🙂
November 23, 2022 at 3:18 AM #1893420Over the years I've collected a ton of 3ds models back when I was using Poser. Sometimes I think about re-installing it just to convert them for DS. This site sometimes does a decent conversion but it's very unreliable.
November 23, 2022 at 6:25 AM #1893438A good (maybe..) model in fbx and parts. No materials, but you can set by group in Surfaces tab. Scale: ¿over 10000? 😀
