So I was wondering on a gaming laptop.. if it is used for rendering does the higher GPU TGP ( Watts ) helps in getting faster renders ?
For example with same rtx 3060 grpahic cards on one laptop ( HP Omen ) has a maximum TGP of 95W whereas other ( Legion 5 Pro ) has a TGP of 130W ..will that make a difference in DAZ like it does in games? 😮Thanks!
July 29, 2021 at 8:40 am #1715993Faster renders not likely. All GPUs will throttle when temperatures (watts draw) rises to a predetermined level. With something like Daz Studio the watts draw is pretty immediate from the beginning of a render and won't increase or decrease much from that point on, and you don't really want your GPU to produce heat to harmful level. It's more a matter of keeping you system cool enough to limit throttling rather than TPG itself. Which is why laptops are not ideal for rendering given their very limited ventilation.
July 29, 2021 at 1:03 pm #1716040AnonymousInactiveRank:I have the Legion 5 with a 3080, it's a beast, well built and doesn't hold back on anything thrown at it even DS. My suggestion is a laptop cooling pad. I purchased a cheap non branded model with four fans which drops the temps by around 41f in some cases, even lower depending on how cool the room is.
If you get one I also recommend an external monitor, mouse and keyboard to keep the machine away from any heat sources including youself. It all aids keeping those temperatures low.
July 29, 2021 at 1:25 pm #1716042To answer the original question, as Frank said, TGP won't help you render faster. It's (roughly) a rating that tells you how much power you can throw at it without it blowing up (assuming it is properly cooled, etc.) It's useful when you're building a desktop system, because you can size your power supply in response to it (along with total calculated mobo draw, accessory/device power draw, and suchlike.)
In my half-ignorant snapshot opinion? It's kind of a useless measure for laptop GPUs, because you already have a power supply built-in, and it's not likely at all that you'll be able to change the P/S on a laptop.
July 29, 2021 at 6:37 pm #1716133AnonymousInactiveRank:Both Frank and old fart are correct. My bad for not addressing the OP's question correctly.
From experience the laptop GPU is powerful and will do well with DS.
More cuda cores in the 3000 cards than it's predecessor but vram is also a bonus.Laptop VS a desktop GPU and depending how complex your scenes are I'd consider a desktop GPU.
As mining takes a dip with ETH 2.0 around the corner it might be wise to wait a few months as cards are dumped on marketplaces for cheap.
July 30, 2021 at 8:42 am #1716223Thank you Frank, Billy and Grouchy for the valuable input. I wish I could build a desktop since it's a much better option but I can't because I have to travel a lot and that's why I can only go for a laptop that I can carry with me.
So what I understand is that a higher watt GPU will not effect the render times in DAZ if I can keep the gpu from throttling? That was my main concern before making a choice since the higher wattt machine is almost $400 extra where I live.
July 30, 2021 at 10:03 am #1716234AnonymousInactiveRank:No it won't. But remember the power will drop to stop it from overheating anyway, AKA throttling, but I haven't had any noticable issues with the 3080 laptop's render times since I tinker with the settings in Afterburner.
One thing afterburner won't do is control the Legion's fans, assuming you are getting a legion laptop. Under 149f is the sweet spot for the GPU and the fans will run at full speed to dissipate the heat, although quietly. You won't regret your purchase 🙂
July 30, 2021 at 3:15 pm #1716280I'm leaning towards a 3070 Legion 5 Pro as of now. Extra 2gb of vram should come in useful in the long run..
Do you have the intel or AMD variant..what I am getting here at my place is R7 5800H with 3070.
Also you recommended using a cooling pad ..do you have any link where I can get something similar..:o
Thanks!July 31, 2021 at 8:46 am #1716422AnonymousInactiveRank:I chose the Ryzen 7 model over Intel after some comparisons from other owners on Reddit. Apart from the obvious power limitations it's almost as good as a desktop.
AMD has been good for me in desktops while intel just messed about with the core count and increased their prices. Just go with the CPU that suits your budget, they both kick ass.
I went with the Kootek Laptop Cooling Pad that has five fans which again took some effort after reading many reviews before buying. It weighs barely anything and easy to carry around, but still bulky. Don't spend too much on branded pads because the budget models seem to do much better.
July 31, 2021 at 10:18 am #1716445I suppose if one has to use a laptop for DS they must. But it's obviously not ideal for running a GPU at 100% for a long time and trying to get rid of all the heat that it generates in such a confined space.
You can use a screwdriver to drive in a nail, but a hammer is the best tool to do it with. Get yourself a box with plenty of ventilation for the CPU and GPU and then don't have to fight the the inherent laptop problem of frying hardware to smithereens.August 1, 2021 at 1:25 am #1716734AnonymousInactiveRank:You mention it's not ideal to run the GPU @ 100% for prolonged periods of time. This is from my own use factually incorrect.
The exhaust system on the Legion 5 dissipates heat without issues. I benchmarked the laptop for 24 hours with burn in test. The GPU with the added cooling solution ran at a maxiumum temp of 149F, even lower depending on the room temperatures.
I wanted to know what I could throw at it hence the test. It would appear it's rock solid, but only time will tell if it will see out it's warranty. Before I purchased the Legion 5 i read a huge amount of reviews. What caught my eye was one owner who wanted to build a 3080 PC for his 3D work but wasn't willing to pay scalpers prices. In comparison he stated the Legion 5 was not far off what he would expect from a desktop setup. His only gripe was the lack of USB ports and those all important extra display ports for multiple screen users.
August 1, 2021 at 6:50 am #1716757@ Billy Thank you I shall go with the Ryzen variant when it's available. At the moment everything is out of stock. While I don't see the same cooling pad I shall get something similar with 5 fans. 🙂 Also your post about thermals on Legion gives me a lot of hope. 😀
@Frank I totally understand but if it wasn't for my wandering ( nature ) and nature of work I would have settled for a desktop. I could prob get a much better build for the price I will be paying for a laptop..but can't help it. :s@Living Thank you so much for the time you took for the detailed explanation and the tips. So I now understand a higher TGP will probably not offer better rendering times. What I will now look out for is thermals on the laptop and Legion seems like a better option here with better cooling comparatively.
August 2, 2021 at 2:37 am #1717006AnonymousInactiveRank:Edit* I own the 3070 model, not the 3080 laptop. (Must have been dreaming for a moment)
Sure, I never considered a performance laptop in the past but this experience has converted me from a nay sayer. I just can't find any faults apart form the obvious I spoke of earlier. Another reason was Lenovo not locking down their hardware as to make in a throw away item. All parts are availabe on their website. I was shocked since the R2R movement has been ranting how they can't get parts from major players in the tech industry.
Oh I could get the beast to run at higher temps if I didn't cool it properly.
I tried it and that's why I purchased the cooling pad. I honestly thought the GPU would be undervolted to the extent it wouldn't go anywhere near 149f but I was wrong. It will run away if not controlled. I'm no expert with GPU'S per se but know how to tame them to an extent that will keep them performing without taking valuable time tinkering with settings. Lenovo has it's own software that appears to be good at controlling everything.BTW i switched off the RGB keyboard since I have no need for flashing lights that just zap more energy and create even more heat. That might have made a slight difference perhaps but I'm not sure.
I still have the idea of eventually buying a 3090 but only a price drop can fulfill that goal, can't see that happening because it looks like Crypto mining is here to stay 🙁
August 2, 2021 at 2:46 am #1717007AnonymousInactiveRank:Hope you can get one soon. I was fortunate because I didn't hesitate when they became available. I've done that in the past and missed out. Enjoy it when you get it 🙂
August 2, 2021 at 7:04 am #1717036Hmm so that clears almost all of my doubts about laptops and TGP. Now I just need to get one. 😀
Thank you once again for all of your valuable time and inputs. 🙂 -
