Hey guys, please check this out:
https://www.daz3d.com/ulrike-hd-for-genesis-8-female
for some reason this character render time is much faster than other character on my PC, my guess here is some advanced shader setting, because when I apply Ulrike's textures on other figures their render time also greatly reduced.
Maybe no SSS or something, but when I change the translucent weight slider I found the render time remain the same.
Any good guess guys?December 15, 2020 at 7:44 PM #1650132The Texture, Bump, Specular and Transparency Maps are (1048 to 4096 square) What that means???
Normally they are (2048 x 2048 to 4096 x 4096)December 16, 2020 at 4:35 AM #1650191A lot of characters now use chromatic sss, like Ensley does. Ulrike uses mono sss.
Chromatic sss is a massive performance hit. Just toggle Ensley to mono and Ulrike to chromatic and you will see a big swing in render times.
The more different surface settings you have, the more complicated it becomes for Iray. If you have translucency, that adds a lot, but of course skin needs that if you want it to look real.
Chromatic sss is somewhat new. Iray did not have this until like Daz 4.10. So all the characters made before that used mono. You will find that most of those characters render much faster than any chromatic based character today. I noticed this right away when I got my first characters that used chromatic skin. On my old machine they took so much longer to render, that I avoided using characters with chromatic until I got faster GPUs.
So if you are looking to render faster, try to use mono sss if you can find a setup that looks good. That is the catch. Chromatic kind of gives skin that little extra variation that mono lacks, so it can take some tweaking to get mono looking good.

We are talking about Ulrike character, right? So here I have seen this odd texture sizes.
(https://www.daz3d.com/ulrike-hd-for-genesis-8-female)December 16, 2020 at 10:47 AM #1650238@littlepleasures @bamboozler90 Thanks for the detailed reply guys, I think thats about it.
Yeah the mono SSS does look kinda blant, but then I apply this wet shader : https://mega.nz/file/XVAW1BxS#v68KD9jLESHN02bfDzGu6zf94rouWm34Pjh9W_dwFBU I found on pixiv and it change the SSS setting to chromatic and it look much better now, also the render time still remain short, shorter than other figures on my pc atleast.

Tried that on 2 of the guy's figures, sasha and ulrike, and to my surprise the one with darker skin tone also has much faster render time. (I cranked ulrike transculent weight up to 0,91 after apply the wet skin shader in the image above)
Anyone know why is that?December 17, 2020 at 2:38 AM #1650443Be careful man. There was a thread over at the Daz forum a few days ago with the exact same title. I assume (hope) it wasn't you or you're at risk of being identified as a sharer.
December 17, 2020 at 8:09 AM #1650480I think it is because the wet surface covers the skin. Think of it as like clothing in a way. You might notice with some clothing your render times actually drop.
Texture size should not effect render speed that much. It mainly effects VRAM. Also, Iray has a built in compression that automatically compresses texture files over certain sizes. You can set these in the advanced setting of Iray. There are two, one for medium threshold, and one for high threshold. Textures over the medium get a medium compression, while ones over high get highly compressed.
By default, these settings are shockingly low, so if you've never changed this setting, you have been compressing those textures all along. In other words, the size didn't matter at all in the end.
Sometimes it is good to increase this setting to get a better quality render. But if the texture already sucks it wont matter. The textures are not compressed in RAM. So your active scene always uses more RAM. This is why your RAM is always higher than what you use in VRAM for rendering, that is Iray's compression at work. It is kind of scary to think with how much VRAM Iray consumes that it can actually be even worse without this compression.
December 18, 2020 at 5:09 AM #1650657@littlepleasures damn you are good LivingPixels, cant say I understand it all but I appreciate the answer. Also does the skin tone (black versus white) affect render time at all LivingPixels?
@bamboozler90 hmm maybe you are right, whenever I used this wet skin shader the render time alway got cut in half atleast, but only with emrys character, hah
@frank22 thank bro, I got it covered.
@kinkygr I found the file here and yes its an awesome wet skin shader.
there are something more but since I dont know Japanese, I dont understand what the guy was talking about.(BTW it look like a modified version of this shader https://www.daz3d.com/genesis-8-wet-body-iray)
