When we hold contest, how many people vote in the contest? Is it mainly made up of the people who participated or does other members of the site also take part in the voting? I was just wondering because I think we should be posting on the homepage when it's time to do voting so a wider audience can join.
I have another question? When are we going to create new art for the Homepage? I was hoping we would be doing something like every 3 months or something this year but we only did stuff once.
November 28, 2019 at 3:32 PM #1349968Im still waiting for the xmas banner comp to start, I think its running a wee bit late.
This time last year the Xmas comp entries had already closed.
As for who is voting, I think its probably just the ones that enter the comp.
I know I couldnt vote on most of the comps that held by members because you needed a google account to vote so that ruled me out.
I also agree with you and thought there were going to be more banner comps this year.
I don't enter the comps to win the points, for me its just fun, it gives me a reason to create art.
But I do admit that the banner competitions are something that do motivate me to really try to win a spot and get my art displayed.Yes I agree with you and would really like to see more competitions, or at least something special on a regular basis.
I have spoken to a few people here about an idea I have where we have a "theme of the week" or a "render challenge" where your invited to render certain objects, figures, animals or situations. I have a few ideas, but I don't think It would be a competition to win points, it would just be for fun, something to occupy your mind durring the week, but it gives people a chance to render things that they may not usually render. Put their little twist to it.
I would love to get something up and running, i think it might give people something to look forward to each week.November 28, 2019 at 11:31 PM #1350344Yeah I created stuff just to put in my portfolio on Behance.net.
It would be nice if inside the list of post where they post items they have one post saying please take a minute to vote on the site contest art mixed in. Because if it's not posted where people can see it no one will really bother to look for it.
Anyway looking forward to another contest.
November 29, 2019 at 2:00 AM #1350467Count me in, I love contests!
November 29, 2019 at 6:20 AM #1350647Gave up on the Mods running contests. Last contest I had to almost beg for and Im not doing that again. Think its down to one a year now unless a member host one. My job and the PS4 have been keeping me busy so there is that. I dont enter contests anywhere else "yet", so its a shame.
November 30, 2019 at 9:16 AM #1352360It would be good to participate.
November 30, 2019 at 1:20 PM #1352663Well I haven't been entering contest much because I was busy. But I notice some of my best stuff I post here unless I'm doing product renders for my job.
But really when the contest is being voted on it should be advertised for everyone on the site to see like they do when items is posted. There should be like a stick post that stays up for the week.
November 30, 2019 at 1:42 PM #1352683Life takes up time for all, including mods and admins. Perhaps it would be wise to create a "contest committee" where people interested could set up a small group of people, maybe a Discord, and have a place to discuss and set up contests. It would be nice to have at least one admin present, ofc, and maybe also get a default points sponsorship from the site (say maybe 20-50k depending on participation in the contest (over 10 participants you get a 50k total price sum from the site, with less you get a total of 30-20k depending)) and such.
If you have maybe 10 people participating in the committee (bad word, I know), you don't really need more than maybe a couple active ones for each contest (one to post it, and keep track, and perhaps someone to handle the voting).
ZGFX isn't ideal for hosting competitions, as the posts tend to disappear quite quickly, but having a "sticky" post on the front page for competitions would help, I think. @hunter is this maybe possible with the current setup? Ie, have a sticky put up when a new contest is announced, and perhaps have it switch to the voting-post when the contest is finished? Would ofc mean that we'd need to notify the mods / admins about it when setting up a contest.
December 4, 2019 at 12:17 AM #1357888Thats the reason the contest section was created. To keep it from getting drowned in request posts.
December 8, 2019 at 5:48 AM #1366720Voting does get posted on the home page, it just doesn't stay long enough, that's why i update the main thread as much as possible when i do one.
I have some ideas for a new contest, but was waiting to see if Hunter or someone posted a Christmas contest.
And as far as voting, usually everyone who enters votes, and i have decided not to do google votes anymore since a quite a few of them are 10, for me 1,1,1,1,1,1,1 everyone else. Then there are a few other users who vote as well, who didn't vote, maybe who wanted to enter. There are normal votes, where i think some thought was put in to it. I think for the voting, to make it fair and open, it'll be limited to accounts created prior to the contest, and voting will be onsite, and each person who posts a vote, they'll copy the thread main post to the top of their vote, so that everytime someone votes, home page gets an new/update post hit, encouraging others, maybe even the leeches, to maybe browse over and vote. We'll keep a direct link in the thread heading, like the second or third line, so you can click right on it from the home page. Number of selections per vote, like top 3 or top 5 or top 8, will possibly be dependent on number of entries. If we can create a 'generic' template for voting threads, it'll be easier.
@errilhl, @d0gg0d, @masin, @jojo, @globalrecession2009 all good ideas!! A committee maybe taking it a bit far, lol, can we get 10 people to do that? At the least, maybe a contest hoster and point donator, and a second to assist with replies and voting? I dunno. When it comes down to it, the hoster is putting up the points, so they can make any rules they want.December 8, 2019 at 6:00 AM #1366734LMAO "10, for me 1,1,1,1,1,1,1 everyone else". That's kind pf the reason why I asked if other people vote beside the entry participants .
Those homepage post are below the fold half the time I don't see them unless I scroll on the homepage after I login which 99% of the time I don't do.
To bad there isn't some site wide popup that you can put up for a week then take down when it's done. Shit I'll even design a simple banner for it if you guys do that.. It could be re-useable every time there's a contest.

December 19, 2019 at 5:55 PM #1384664Im to hard of a critic. I rarely am happy with what I do much less others. When I do see someone post amazing work here it almost never wins and will be lucky to come in third. Its a matter of taste which is why at least 3 people should vote. Of course personal contest are what they are.
I hate seeing similar renders posted a day after another persons. That is an instant lose vote in my book. I have however seen almost the exact same render posted within hours so some people do get similar ideas. That said, the pool to fish from here is pretty small. Not like we normally have 50 entries where like ideas would be more common. I've only seen a few really large contest and those were pretty diverse.
Ive down voted a few of my entries when Ive seen art that is superior and deserves to win. If its close then I lean towards myself of course. I am actually against a large community vote since their are a-holes that are just haters and could really mess up voting. Id rather see the mods vote. Not really enough people here that are part of the community to create a committee. Also I'll down vote a great render that has nothing to do with the theme listed. Posting a duck in a render about dogs shouldn't get a vote above 1.
Ive lost count of the thousands of points Ive dumped into contest to support the community only to see it slowly degrade into almost nothing. I miss arguments over artistic merit but instead I get to argue over site policies. Unfortunately Im not at the level where I have a hundred thousand points to spare any more. So I'll leave contests to others to run. Hopefully the mods will decide to spend a bit more time investing into members once they get their lives back on track, rather than watching the community struggle to support itself.
December 19, 2019 at 6:47 PM #1384724I feel you man. I personally don't like voting on artwork contest I've submitted into because I can be bias myself. The only reason I use this site more than others is for the contest and points.
I mean I could easily go to one of my other sites to download but I enjoy the contest I just wish more of the community would take a minute to drop by during voting to vote for our artwork so we don't have to do it ourselves.
December 24, 2019 at 1:25 AM #1391442We'll, we have pop ups now. If we can convince hunter and mods to put a link in the logon popup when a contest is done, that would be cool. As for voting on your own artwork, i have no thoughts. Be honest with yourself.
