OpenWater

Over seventy percent of our planet’s surface is covered with water. For millennia, human activity has been intimately tied to lakes, seas, oceans and other bodies of water. Our imaginary worlds rendered in software often depict activities related to being on or in water in all kinds of weather, from calm lakes with gentle ripples to angry seas with churning waters.

The OpenWater product tries to capture the scene of ‘being there’, among the waves by representing an open expanse of water. The models cover a square area of about ten to twelve human heights along their edges with a thickness enough to give the impression of a deep ocean in conjunction with a little trick (see some of the promotional images). The OpenWater product is comprised of three sets representing small, medium and large waves, measured in human scale. Each set contains eight key models from a fluid dynamics simulation, depicting the travel of a main wave across the diagonal of the square, so each model is unique, but similar to the other ones. It is envisioned that the models cover enough area to be included in a scene with one hero figure, perhaps a small group of figures, particularly if ‘depth of field’ is used in rendering.

The prop models are envisioned to represent a 3D volume material, thus there are no texture maps supplied. It is anticipated that the user will assign a 3D material shader such as water, milk, chocolate, lava, metal or other material. These generally work without the need for texture maps. For the generation of promo images, DAZ Studio’s water Iray shaders were used.

I hope these new prop models will add a splash of fun to your scenes.
Happy rendering!
