In regards to "rules", they've been established within artistic fields as a way to understand how people view and interpret art. They aren't strict and in fact at one time, weren't even mentioned, it was just something that people with artistic lilts "knew" or inherently understood. Impressionism, Surrealism, Cubism or even so called 'modern art' wouldn't exist if people stuck rigidly to established rules.
But, art evolves as the way people view things evolves, so make something that works for you and looks interesting to you. It could look interesting to someone else as well or they might mention something to you that gives you a little "Eureka" moment that helps you to make things that are more effective. I've never known an artist who isn't trying to get better, no matter how experienced they are.
@Miarka, I studied art at college and have sketched for most of my life, I've spent some interesting afternoons in galleries looking at the paintings and I can honestly say that even with art I don't particularly like, if you look at it long enough you can start to understand what the artist was trying to do. You can notice little tricks they employed to draw the eye around the work and those can be employed with any 2D art output. If you want to learn about how to build a good composition or an interesting work, look at good art and try to understand it. You'll learn a lot more than just reading books on the matter.May 16, 2018 at 2:04 pm #607136The only rule a chair has is it is something you sit on.
Given enough time you can find similarity in anything. An orange has the same shape as the Earth, Same color as a car, Same texture as a jacket but its an orange. Looking for the da vinci code in a painting is ridiculous.
Look for the golden rule here
May 17, 2018 at 5:36 am #607810I can see lots of golden rule "lines" in that thing you posted, but in my mind I don't consider it art. Don't nobody start going off on me now. I realize the facts. I'm not stupid. I know that humans would pay $100Ks more than anything I've painted or will paint, because society doesn't consider scifi and fantasy as real art, though its the same as any Norman Rockwell painting, just with different props and costumes.
However, just because someone says its art and humans are stupid enough to purchase the above scribbles for more than the average price of a home here in the USA, doesn't mean its "art".
And I don't want to hear any psychobabble about how its a painting about feelings or moods or a some inner sanctum of the mind that the artist was expressing. Nobody will ever sway my opinion that its not something my ex 8yr old grandson could slop down on canvas.May 17, 2018 at 5:45 am #607816May 17, 2018 at 11:02 pm #608597@Miarka 2 clips from the original dvd from https://members.kelbyone.com/course-category/photography/

That's what makes you more awesome than your art - your wit!
I'll definitely have to use that the next time someone quotes that stupid rule of chair analogy again. Thanks @3danimenut101May 21, 2018 at 2:54 am #612296If you drink beer, always order a long neck bottle.
May 21, 2018 at 3:00 am #612300I may have blurted out the word 'stupid' in one of my drunk stupors. No offense to @d0gg0d and lest we forget, the topic of this thread is to let @Miarka know our thoughts regarding her "portrait". First of all, To be honest. I can never say anything bad about your art. You are in a level all your own. Truly remarkable as is all your other art that you've shared with this community. I was told that rule of chair by one of my psychiatrists one too many times. So when I saw @3danimenut101's reply, I thought how brilliant it would have been to say something clever like that, or even use that chair like firewood like in that classic disney cartoon "Pinnochio" Thank you for the opportunity for commenting on your art and thank you for accepting my apology if I offended anyone.

Words are words, and nothing more...what gets stuck in my crawl is when i hear "Words wound like a knife" or "Words are more painful then a bullet"
Ahhhhhhh, yeah no they aren't...been shot before, think i'd prefer someone shouting profanity at me.May 21, 2018 at 3:50 am #612331Obese girl is made fun of from Jr High to High School.
She's called fat one to many times and kills herself.
Fat is only a word.
Child is called stupid his entire life by his Dad. At adulthood he has developed mental problems and finds it hard to get along with others.
Stupid is only a word.
Propaganda has been an effective weapon in war and elections.
Bad press had crippled careers and lies have sent innocent people to jail.At night if i hear a noise ill go for my gun but atm we are using words online.

Semantics...wasn't my point, my point is calling someone "Stupid" or shooting them in the leg which one hurts more, not psychologically, physically. -
