And, now, I can say that my favourite piece was Rob's air-fuelling scene.April 6, 2018 at 12:57 pm #559791Thank you! I appreciate your comment, but...
Check out the story I wrote for the piece. What actually happened over the jungles of North Vietnam was actually much more heroic and fascinating than a simple in-flight refueling...
In March of 1967, Captain Bob Pardo and his wingman, 1st Lieutenant Earl Aman, had taken heavy fire on a mission over North Vietnam. Pardo’s damage was somewhat light and he would have been able to make it back to their Air Base, but Aman’s fighter had been hit hard and he was rapidly losing fuel. Although Pardo could have saved himself and his aircraft, he chose to stay with his wingman and try to help him get back to friendly skies. That’s when Pardo had an idea. He instructed Aman to lower his tailhook on the back of the aircraft. Pardo then carefully maneuvered his F-4 below and to the rear and made contact with the lowered tailhook at his windscreen. He then proceeded to “push” the crippled aircraft 88 miles until they were safely into South Vietnam. At this point, Pardo had expended all of his own fuel and the aircrew from both fighters were forced to eject from their aircrafts where rescue crews could come retrieve them.
Despite this heroic and selfless act of courage, Captain Pardo was demoted for losing his own aircraft when he could have saved it. Go figure. The USAF rectified this travesty in 1989 when they gave him a Silver Star for his bravery. I feel it should have been the Medal of Honor.April 6, 2018 at 3:34 pm #559958😀 Thank you for hosting the contest!! I am most definitely looking forward to the next! Had a lot of fun with this!
EDIT: I was thinking after I posted mine, that it would of been cool to make it animated through a GIF. But I wasn't sure if that was even allowed. Normally, are we allowed (unless mentioned otherwise) to post an animated art piece as a GIF for contests like this? Or is it normally supposed to be single frames that in visions and captures the idea?
April 6, 2018 at 6:24 pm #560111@bty12345 : Never thought about it... Surely, I would have allowed it. I don't think anybody posted a gif, but I saw a comic once.
April 6, 2018 at 6:46 pm #560132As promised, here's the detailed votes for each artwork.
April 6, 2018 at 8:02 pm #560208It's a honor. Thank you so much everyone. That was one of my favorite pieces to do yet. And a huge thank you to @Miarka for hosting a well planned out and successful contest. And congratulations to all of the winners Rob @robf4g210 & MicroBaked @bty12345. Everyone did such fantastic artwork.
April 6, 2018 at 9:36 pm #560297Rob, I didn't mean to offend, I only focused on the technical part of the render itself. Colors, tonal balance, camera angle, overall detail...
April 6, 2018 at 9:49 pm #560311Yan, you didn’t offend me in the slightest. Quite the opposite!
I just wanted to make sure I gave Captain Pardo the props he deserves.
