Especially when putting up request-lists, it's a pain to keep track of things as some stuff gets filled, and the list isn't updated, and so on.

Could we please get rid of the limit on for how long you can edit a post? Instead, just make the "keep a log of this edit" default (remove the choice), and always keep that log, if there for some reason needs to be a mod-intervention.

It would make life easier, and would probably also make the forum a little bit more like an actual forum 😉

I'm gonna yell up on all of you, sorry about that

What I do is just revise the request with a new post on the thread, I don't find it a big deal TBH.

    🙂

Aye. But when a thread becomes several pages, it's so much simpler to just edit the OP.

    Hmm.

Whilst you could do it that way it breaks the coherence of the thread, as others would have posted in response to earlier versions of the OP.
I think it is easier for newcomers to the thread to pick up on current requirements if there is an update every so often.

    🙂

Eh, what? Do you even forum?

Having updated posts every time someone post a couple, or even just 1 of the requests, is in my opinion horribly wasteful - not to mention that EACH and EVERY new post gets posted on the timeline on the front page (also, if you need to edit... both of those "posts" will show up). The system is awful, but it's what we've got. Why make it worse.

And seriously, if people get weirded out by edited posts, then edit them so history isn't lost, then, for instance by doing

xxxxx - asset name still needed
    xxxxx - asset name received
xxxxx - asset name still needed

Simple, easy to understand, and avoids having to redo the post several times over, and potenitally confusing people - especially if you have to edit to add back something, for instance, if one of your sources didn't come through, and so on.

Well, it isn't great, but I don't have any issue with how it works now & I have used fora since the early 1990s.

If you put both of your arguments together, it becomes obvious that there are circumstances when it would be correct to edit a ppost and other circumstances when it would be incorrect

Errilhl uses lists of requests as an example of when and why would be very useful to continuoulsy edit a post rather than post an update. I agree 100% that we need to be able to edit lists of requests. The current system of reposting is time-consuming so lists don't stay up-to-date, generates wasteful posts (spam?) and (I suspect) causes people to ignore lists of requests rather than read them to see if they have anything to offer

Conversely, Eelgoo uses discussions as an example of when editing a post would make the thread truly incomprehensible. If posts are editted, the context for replies is lost and the replies become meaningless.

Both arguments are correct, but only in cerain circumstances. I think this argues that we do need to be able to edit posts, but that this cannot be the only option and we also need to be able to post replies. If we had both options, it would then be at the discretion of the user which to use for a given thread. I think it would be very clear which would be the right choice every time.

Even if we can edit posts, we shoud only be able to edit our own posts. I would not want anyone to be able to edit a bounty becuase this opens the dorr to people fiddling with how much they are owed if they post an item. I would not want people to be able to add items to lists of requests becuase this commits the OP to pay a bounty on an item they have not asked for. If you want to add to someone's list of requests, or chip in your own contribution to the bounty, you can post a reply or PM the OP. The OP can then edit the list

Of course you should only be able to edit own posts. Another things that would make this useful, is when someone adds points to a request, for instance, since many post the points number in the request title - this often leads to the wrong number showing for new readers.

As for the editing and therefore creating chaos - that's a possibility, in all forums. This is why you have a post-log, so anyone who wants can go and look at what the post said before the edit.

And also why we do not have the ability to delete a post ourselves - that should still lie with the admins.
