A11 (Matilda MK1) Infantry Tank

Background:

In late 1935, the Vickers-Armstrong company were tasked with building a small, cheap but well armoured tank armed with just one machine gun, either a .303 or .50 which had to resist all known anti-tank weapons of the day. Its armour was 60mm thick overall with 10mm in less vulnerable areas, utilising an existing governed Ford V8 engine and an adapted suspension from the Medium Dragon MkIV artillery tractor. Designated as the A11 Matilda Infantry Tank, it was designed to support attacking infantry so only had a top (governed) speed of 8mph.

The interior was sparse with barely enough room for the two man crew, a driver and commander. The Matilda proved to be effective against all anti-tank weapons with the exception of the Flak 88, the main drawbacks being the exposed tracks and the fact the commander had to perform all duties (except drive) which proved difficult in the cramped conditions. These drawbacks led to a better tank being developed designated the A12 Matilda. Many of the MK1's in service were subsequently left in France at the Dunkirk evacuation.

Model Features:

Tank Tracks can rotate forward and backward, independantly or together.
Turret rotates
Left and right Turret hatches open /close
Front Turret hatch can open (although in reality this was not the case)
Gun elevates
Driver hatch opens / closes (also automatically raises gun)
