My Mac is running the most recent version of the OS and yet the main application to interact with files doesn't recognize this as anything, nor do my easy to load image viewers (well, the one that I use most often can open them, but not convert them to a usable format).
Is this just a mac thing that makes these files mostly useless? Are JPGs really that bad?
And, why I'm whining about this is because a few of them have been used for the images associated with downloads here, so downloading the image (which I do to help me recognize what it is when I am ready to install) doesn't help, since I can't see the picture in my file manager.

Recently I have had the same issue with Firefox.
TBH it is a pain.I don't know why they would move to an obscure user-hostile format like that.

I assumed it was the individual who posted the couple of items that I was encountering this with, but when I went to the original store's page to try one of the images, it came out in webp as well. Safari and Firefox don't do this, so I guess I'll be using Chrome less. Firefox seems pretty speedy, so I may just switch altogether.
In google's defense, the useless on my desktop webp is about 1/2 the original jpg size...but, if the key tools I use (i.e. my OS) don't recognize it, then it isn't very useful.
.webp is a VERY good format for reducing footprint, especially in image-intensive games (think Ren'Py visual novels / porn games) - you can usually reduce the footprint of the game about 70-80% without losing too much detail, which can be significant for such titles.
There are, however, nothing that should automatically convert JPG or PNG files to webp format without the original poster / uploader / creator having actually uploaded a webp file.
So really it should be the browser people who get their act together to enable a workable 'save as jpg' ( or whatever usable format you chose ) function.

For now, FireFox is doing a fine job of keeping these image downloads useful once again. As great as the format may be, Apple seems perfectly happy to stand their ground despite benefits to their customers if it suits management's decision. I had to purchase a windows computer just to enjoy the benefits of iRay and will probably migrate my day to day workflow away from apple entirely over the course of the next year.
Hi LivingPixels, I believe the problem is getting worse, so perhaps you don't need any help finding them, but it could be your interests don't overlap with mine and the stuff you are downloading are coincidentally unaffected.

https://zonegfx.com/voidbright-outfit-for-genesis-8-females/These two happen to be from the same uploader, but in my early experience with these files, I found that the file at DAZ' website was also affected, so I don't think the uploader is causing it. While it seems somewhat arbitrary which files get converted by chrome, perhaps there really is logic and the ones affected happen to be poorly compressed originally?
Hm, I guess next time, I'll use the link button above, maybe it won't try to embed the page into the forum post?
