January is almost over and February is about to start. Will we at least get to do a Valentines contest? Maybe we can do new Spring homepage images for March? April Fools for April? Anything?
If my contest in December was any kind of a barometer for member interest, I’d say the “give a damn” was broken. Maybe the theme wasn’t as cool as I thought or maybe people were just busy, I don’t know. By far the least successful contest I’ve ever hosted.
I had a good response but I think it just boils down to two things:
- I don't have the points to motivate people.
- Making the contest myself wouldn't really motivate me.It's more of a challenge to me to design something if it's requested by someone else. Which is why I actually enjoy these contest.
It helps me learn this program better when I have to dig for things I wasn't really expecting myself to ever use. As appose to me swimming around in my comfort zone.
I would really like a chance to get up on the Homepage since I missed the Xmas contest to be honest.
I actually wanted to do the Xmas contest. But I had problems with my computer. I had bought a GTX 1070 ti on Black Friday and it didn't come with any parts to connect to my VGA monitor and it took 3 weeks to get the parts I needed to use my computer again.
By the time I actually was able to use my computer again it was like the last week of December. On top of that my idea for the contest was kinda bigger than my computer could have handled and I needed to test all the new parts in my computer to see what they were capable of. That's why I spent the rest of that month rendering test rendering and re-rendering stuff I couldn't render in the past.
Right now I'm kinda in a artist block when it comes to doing my own thing so I've been checking on here everyday to see if you guys posted anything.
I would show you guys some of my renders but I want to save them just in case they line up with some of the new contest you guys post up. With my new GTX 1070 I turn out ideas faster then I did on my CPU which I used to use before.
If you guys ever need artwork for your homepage or hold another contest for it. I'm there!
Are you on DeviantArt? I run a contest group called the CG-Contest-Corner that has been very popular. We have monthly contests for DeviantArt points.

Of course, it goes without saying that discretion is paramount when it comes to ZoneGFX. We have Zone people in the group, but the majority are from the DeviantArt community including some very high profile 3D artists with close ties to DAZ.
I have a Deviant account but I never used it. I had it since 2005 maybe but I never created anything worth putting up there to be honest. I usually post most of my work on Behance.net (basic graphic design stuff) for work related purposes and I recently started posting my stuff on Instagram last year. Now that I'm getting better at this I think I should start looking into it.
Post the link so I can look around.
Also I wouldn't mind creating something for the Spring homepage for Zonegfx. No points necessary.
Been thinking the same thing. Im fairly new to the site and it looks like mods ran a contest once a month but that slowly died out and seems like members picked it up. There are only a handful of people that enter most contests and only a few contests have gotten large responses. Not sure why since every damn thing is free.
No need to speculate on the group's inner workings. I'm the mod; have been since the beginning. There are two other mods, but they are mostly inactive.
We do have contests every month. Our first contest was wildly popular with 25 entries. Only six of the entries were from (known) Zone people.
The mistake that I and the other mods made was in running a side contest for an optional "best story or narrative" wherein the winner had the option to choose the theme for the next contest. I quickly learned that the concept sounded good, but in reality the themes selected did not draw the huge participation that the first contest did. So in December, I put an end to that and selected a mirror of the Zone Christmas Caroling contest; same theme. Still did not draw the number of contestants I was hoping for, much like in the Zone Contest.
For the month of January, I decided to pick a theme that would hopefully bring more people to enter. The theme is "Sharp Edges" (renders focusing on or featuring swords, axes, knives or anything with a sharp edge). So far, we have 12 entries with a week left to go, so I would say that it worked.
So when it comes to entries and responses to contests, theme is everything.
I just joined the DeviantArt group but I passed on the contest since the month is almost over already. I don't like starting thing late. I'm going to wait till February, hopefully it's something I can do.
Right now I'm trying to make a comic book with Daz3d and my cheesy writing skills. So far I have a scene setup that looks pretty nice with the right atmosphere.
I built that with Video Game Rips of GTA 5 some Daz and some building from 3DS Max site. That's what I started working on in December when I finally got my Video Card.
This site and a few others are the only thing that makes Daz3D actually fun to use. I used to use Poser but I never had access to resources like this so I never really used it much. With all the items you guys post it just makes you want to render random things.
Man when I learn HDRI light renders with Iray oh my god it blew my mind. I must've done like 100 different renders that day. Since then I've started to spend days and days on doing lighting for my renders. It's so easy to make anything look great once you get access to some good HDRI lighting for Daz.
Anyway I'm looking forward to next month.
