Removing nested folders in content manager

Im old school so i like the content manager and dont use smart content.

The whole "who made this" game is a pain to play. Its like a hide and seek game.

Im sure the experienced content veterans must know what this means.

So by removing stuff from a folder thats in a folder it lets me see whats in side and also the name of the product.

I have done a few folders as a test and it makes it so much easy to find stuff now.

When I can dedicate some time i want to go through all the props, hair, clothing etc. It will take a long time.

Question is how many people do the same and is there anything i shouldnt do before i start this task?

    Thanks

I understand why the Content creator's would want to nest their stuff in a "personalized set of folders" but so many of them screw it up, and end up breaking functionality in Daz, it's not even funny. I absolutely DESPISE "smart (IDIOT you mean) Content". It isn't as smart as they want to think it is. Like when I'm working on a G8F character, and it shows content intended for V3... WTF? Yeah, Smart Content, RIGHT! lol

So far, I've only dealt with obviously broken folders, or cases of where the creator changed their name somehow and I end up with like 5 versions of "ThisIsMyCompany" type folders in a content type folder... (can you say "sledgehammer"?) ROFL

Oh yeah it drives me nuts.
Lets say I load up a figure and it loads with iray skin so i go to change the skin for 3delight and if its a model by eg sabby, then i wont find the file by the models name i need to go to the sabby folder.

But first i need to know who made the model and sometimes a product wont list the creators name.
So the only way i can find this is to get the original install file and open its contents and go to the materials file in the zip to see what the folder is called, and then i can go find it.
Its been a problem for a long time with creators not sticking to the flow of the file system.

But taking controll of my content has always been a challenge and I always give up after a while.

I actually did look briefly at your thread a few days ago. Its nice to see someone that takes pride in his content library.

I download so much daz stuff from the other sites its not funny
I am a hoarder and will download everything and anything i can if i can 🙂

However I do like your approach with your content and will have a thorough read of that thread.

    Thanks

    I'm glad someone appreciates it.
It is so much easier to find if you have something, if you know exactly where it should be.
A strict nomenclature of files helps so much with that.

If you have any questions about it tack it on to the end of that thread.
    🙂

I remove as many nested folders as possible, I also subdivide stuff into more logical folders, As an example when I open up Gen3 female clothing rather than having to go through a list which would barely fit on a toilet roll I am now greeted by a list of folders each containing specific types of clothing, ie: Lingerie, Casual, Slutty, Footwear, Sci-Fi, Urban, etc. etc.

I still have a lot to re-organise and would highly recommend anyone who is starting from fresh to think very carefully about how they want to sort their content as it's a lot easier to do item by item as you install. also if something goes wrong it's a lot easier to fix.

I use both Smart Content and Content Manager. I have no issues with Smart Control, it does exactly what it says it will do. Show you content that is available for the asset you have highlighted in the scene. The proviso is that the vendor needs to categorise their content correctly. This requires accurate meta data. And that is where the system falls down. Vendors for the most part either cannot or will not tag their assets correctly. Seriously how hard is it - my asset if for Gen 8 Females, Tag - done. Nope - lets tag 1/2 - then some I tag as g3m for some reason and the rest I cannot be bothered so no tags for you at all.

This could all be avoided if the job of pathing, tagging etc was all handled by someone at Daz who knows what they are doing. And don't forget we also have other sites who either won't or are not allowed to use meta data so content manager is the only way to go.

One of these days they will take me up on my offer to work from home, categorise all content from all vendors with correct metadata, make it dim installable and sit back happy.

Manual installers can still do so, DIM people will be happy and you can still use you choice of smart content of content manager or both (will also make uninstalling an asset easier).

Why is this so hard for you Daz. If a hack like me can do it, why cannot you so called professionals.

Because they're all to busy imagining how they can break the next version??

*used to work at EA, so I KNOW how true that idea is*

Sad but true Kendra. Why focus on the now when you can destroy the future.
