Yep, had a similar issue myself a couple of months back.

I always take the opportunity to upgrade some, so I get a 'feel a little better' factor in there too! 😉

I've had capacitors blow out on an old PC but never a "cooked motherboard", what happened?

For me, it was an old board which I couldn't get to run cool enough.
Water cooling is definitely the way to go! 😉

I've got an AIO liquid cooler on my cpu but tbh I didn't see much of a difference from when I had an air cooler. What sort of temps were you getting @eelgoo?

I dunno. It ran constantly for weeks at a time, then i went on vacation and turned it off. When i got home, it powered up, booted, shut down. Never recovered. Wasn't on for 2 minutes, i barely logged in. I think it was my h115i pump, thinking the connection came unseated, and stopped spinning water, so it overheated? And the power supply was also acting funny.

Out of the box, with a slight OC on the proc,
    http://www.userbenchmark.com/UserRun/9848309
which i don't think is to bad.

So, i did go and try to switch to the AMD Ryzen 7 2700 and new ASRock AMD MB, new memory, new psu, at microcenter (it's 45 miles on way mind you) and when i got home, the shit didn't work. Turns out the motherboard bios needed to be updated prior to using that proc. So i drove back, that day, got a Gigabyte Aorus Gaming board for the proc. Nothing, no video, onboard and GPU. Pissed at this point, drove back, again, returned all the parts, and swapped for all new parts, INTEL this time, first boot, no issues, well the GPU wasn't working (SAGGING too much) so it kept erroring but that was an easy fix, need to craft a nice bracket. so i ended up with ASUS ROG STRIX Z370-E Gaming MB, i7 8700k proc, 16 GB ballistix ram, 750W evga PSU in the end, along with my AORUS 1080 TI 11GB EXTREME GPU.

I was trying to save money, but in the end, whatever. I blew a crapton.

I do have to say though, MicroCenter was phenomenal in handling the return. They asked what was wrong, i said i wasn't posting, not sure what part was bad, and didn't want to risk keeping the bad part in the exchange, so return it all and i'll get new shit. The tech was like, look your ram and PSU are probably fine, don't switch them, but in the end, i said i didn't want to risk driving 90 miles round trip again, i want all new shit. They all just kept saying "Fair Enough", must be their catch phrase, like Chic-Fil-A says "My Pleasure" every time you say thank you.

I was getting shut downs at around 70 C.

    Now it runs below 30

    🙂

I average around 30 as well, 55ish under full load. Seems to be about right

Yeah I'm happy with the final setup. It's in the 99th percentile world wide. Now i'm definitely broke.
